The Demon Slayer anime series has some of the most stunning opening and closing sequences from the recent decade. Animated by Ufotable, the battle sequences, breathing techniques, and genuine displays of emotion from the voice actors are why the anime is cherished by fans worldwide. However, one of the most defining aspects of the franchise is its music. From artists such as LiSA and Aimer, Demon Slayer theme songs are among the most recognizable in anime history.

Not only are Demon Slayer’s theme songs adored by anime fans, but they have also been recognized in multiple Japanese music award shows. In May 2022, LiSA’s 15th single song, “Gurenge”, took home the Gold Award at the JASRAC Awards for the 2nd year in a row. This award meant that “Gurenge” was Japan’s most profitable domestic song in 2021.

In addition, LiSA also claimed the Silver Award for her song “Homura”, which is the Demon Slayer: Mugen Train movie theme. From “Gurenge” to the anime’s most recent theme, “Kizuna No Kiseki”, Demon Slayer’s musical lineup is one of the best. However, only one song stands above the rest.

Koi Kogare

Season 3’s ending theme song has one unique aspect that perfectly aligns with the Swordsmith Village Arc.

“Koi Kogare” is performed by Japanese vocalist Milet and rock band Man with a Mission. This song serves as the ending theme for season 3 of Demon Slayer. While there aren’t many qualities that set it apart from the other themes, one element matches it to season 3 perfectly. In the ending theme, Hashira Mitsuri and Muichiro take center stage, which mirrors the lead vocalists’ duet in “Koi Kogare”.

“I’ve been searching for it all along, the love that is lost. The endless nights of defeat, where irrationality prevails.” – “Koi Kogare”

The Swordsmith Village Arc is one of the most pivotal arcs in the Demon Slayer series. In addition, its episodes explore the backstories of the Love Hashira, Mitsuri Kanroji, and the Mist Hashira, Muichiro Tokito. The ending sequence for season 3 provides glimpses into these backstories in a cheerful montage. Since the Mugen Train film, Rengoku has stolen the spotlight from the other Hashira, but Muichiro and Mitsuri receive well-deserved attention in the “Koi Kogare” ending sequence.

Asa Ga Kuru

Season 2’s 2nd ending maintains the liveliness of the Entertainment District while still acknowledging the arc’s dark side.

Tengen looking down in Demon Slayer's entertainment District Arc

“Asa Ga Kuru”, performed by Aimer, is the 2nd ending theme song in season 2 of Demon Slayer. The music fits well with the other themes in the anime. However, only one opening from season 2 compares to the most iconic themes from the series. Nevertheless, while the 2nd half of season 2 has a much more serious tone, the ending maintains a sense of liveliness as the end of the Entertainment District Arc approaches.

“A new morning will arrive. A song will start soon, heading for the dawn that is calling for you.” – “Asa Ga Kuru”

The Entertainment District Arc is the flashiest in the series. The four protagonists, Tanjiro, Nezuko, Zenitsu, and Inosuke, follow the Sound Hashira, Tengen Uzui, to the Entertainment District to uncover a mystery of sudden disappearances. Donning their comedic new looks, the four infiltrate the brothels and face a pair of terrifying new foes. The 2nd half of season 2 takes a dark turn. Still, the 2nd ending maintains the colorful theme with vibrant red accented lighting and vivid obi sashes.

Shirogane

Season 2’s 1st ending reminds fans why Mugen Train was such a hit.

Kyojuro the Flame Hashiraprepares for battle on the Mugen Train

“Shirogane” is performed by Demon Slayer’s most iconic vocalist, LiSA. She has provided anime fans with many beloved themes, and “Shirogane” lives up to expectations. For those who watched the Demon Slayer: Mugen Train film, the beginning of season 2 served as a recap. Similarly, the 1st ending theme song relives the events of the Mugen Train arc in a heartwarming montage featuring the four main protagonists and the fan-favorite Hashira, Kyojuro Rengoku.

“If we start flying once more, the beautiful sky can definitely be seen. We will dispel the darkness up into the fire.” – “Shirogane”

Mugen Train is the most famous arc in the Demon Slayer series. While most arcs typically receive one or two theme songs, Mugen Train contains three songs total, including the theme written for the 2021 film. The lyrics in “Shirogane” are full of hope and pay tribute to the Flame Hashira throughout the song. Finally, with a fast-paced, drum set-driven beat and LiSA’s masterful vocals, season 2’s 1st ending is a solid addition to the Mugen Train playlist.

Akeboshi

Season 2’s 1st opening is full of gorgeous scenery and complimentary melodies.

Following the widely successful Demon Slayer: Mugen Train film in 2021, season 2 of the anime series was released. While the first few episodes primarily served as a brief recap, the opening theme songs remind fans why the Mugen Train movie is still the most successful anime movie of all time. Through stunning visuals and unique musical embellishments, LiSA once again produces an incredible opening theme song for Demon Slayer.

“Chase after the sun, the train keeps moving forward. A song of chaos. In the dark sky, the morning star quietly provides a string of light.” – “Akeboshi”

“Akesboshi”, performed by lead vocalist LiSA, captures the most visually pleasing moments throughout the Mugen Train Arc. For example, the opening montage includes Tanjiro’s dream-like state as he sinks deeper into cerulean waters. Furthermore, Rengoku and his brother Senjuro’s bright color palettes are beautifully complimented by an orange sunset background. Finally, Tanjiro’s Water Breathing techniques, coupled with electric violin melodies, make “Akeboshi” one of the best theme songs in Demon Slayer’s 2nd season.

Kizuna No Kiseki

Season 3’s opening theme is well-suited to the anime’s climax.

Milet and Man with a Mission return with stellar vocals in season 3’s opening theme song, “Kizuna No Kiseki.” Released in the summer of 2023, the Swordsmith Village Arc is still fresh in fans’ minds. Additionally, this arc marks the most pivotal moment in the show: Nezuko’s return to humanity. After the worldwide hype of the Mugen Train film, audiences eagerly awaited Demon Slayer’s return, and season 3 delivered.

“I relive that day even when I close my eyes. No matter how overwhelmed, someday I will dedicate to you the future you’ve been yearning for.” – “Kizuna No Kiseki”

Like Season 3’s ending theme song, the opening also primarily features Misturi and Muichiro. In an epic battle montage, the sword stylings of Tanjiro and the Hashira are displayed. Furthermore, the passionate vocal delivery from Milet and Man with a Mission is impeccable, adding a sense of urgency and impending climax to the series’ arc. Through musically synchronized attacks, powerful vocals, and flawless, eye-catching animation, “Kizuna No Kiseki” brings excitement to an impactful new season.

From the Edge

Season 1’s ending song is wonderfully nostalgic for veteran Demon Slayer fans.

Season 1’s theme songs are among the most recognizable in the Demon Slayer series. LiSA’s extraordinary vocals are displayed once more in “From the Edge”, season 1’s ending song. While Demon Slayer has four confirmed seasons, its earlier arcs hold up against their newer counterparts. The ending sequence in season 1 features tidbits of Tanjiro’s backstory and teases his long journey ahead in a montage that will have veteran fans feeling nostalgic.

“Unleash your destiny. Surely, you’re able to break into a run. Surely, your wishes will come true. Crush the conflicts of yesterday. Cry for the future from the edge of darkness.” – “From the Edge”

LiSA’s song, “From the Edge”, is the perfect ending theme for season 1, as its lyrics are full of encouragement and hope for the future. The song not only launches viewers into subsequent seasons, but it also foreshadows essential plot points. For example, the ending sequence features a moment from Tanjiro’s backstory, where he observes his father’s Hinokami Kagura Fire-Breathing dance, which later becomes a crucial part of the protagonist’s character development.

3

Zankyosanka

Season 2’s 2nd opening is undoubtedly the series’ most musically satisfying and dynamic theme.

Coupled with the vibrancy of the Entertainment District Arc, season 2’s 2nd opening is the most energetic theme song in the entire Demon Slayer franchise. Considering Tengen Uzui the Sound Hashira is featured in Season 2, “Zankyosanka” is the perfect opening theme. Performed by Aimer, the 2nd opening theme song marks her second contribution to the Demon Slayer series. In addition, the bouncy piano arrangement and spirited ensemble chorus help take the opening sequence to new heights.

“Let my voice strain like a burning flower, lighting up the darkness. Change my vague, correct answers into a musical score. Counting the nights and painting the mornings. Produce a vivid sound.” – “Zankyosanka”

Demon Slayer’s 2nd opening sequence for the Entertainment District Arc is one that Tengen would be proud of. Out of all the sequences, Zankyosanka is the best aligned with its montage. The opening begins with Tengen, who stands watching a spectacular fireworks show, perfectly representing his flashy life philosophy. Furthermore, the montage is full of movement, with key poses landing in sync with the music more than in previous openings. The musicality and gaudy imagery are expertly suited to Demon Slayer’s most visually pleasing episodes.

2

Homura

Considering the tremendous success of the Mugen Train film, it only makes sense that it received an equally iconic theme song.

Rengoku's death in Mugen Train, where he sits in front of the sunrise with a bloody face.

“Homura” is a heartbreaking song about letting go, which is well-suited to the themes of Demon Slayer: Mugen Train. The 2021 Demon Slayer film found unprecedented success worldwide, earning $21 million domestically on its opening weekend and a worldwide gross of over $450 million. The popularity of Demon Slayer can be accredited to many things, including its voice acting, animation, and storyline. However, one character won the hearts of fans, both new and old.

“We met amidst a blazing journey. Coming together, then letting go for the sake of the future. Every time a dream comes true, I’ll remember you.” – “Homura”

Kyojuro Rengoku, the Flame Hashira, had a minimal yet essential role in the Demon Slayer story. Mugen Train explores his backstory and allows the audience to grow fond of him, only to erase him forever. “Homura” pays tribute to the beloved member of the Demon Slayer Corp. It begins with solemn chords that simulate wind chimes, resembling those from Rengoku’s past. LiSA joins in with heavy-hearted lyrics, representing the melancholy that Tanjiro and his friends feel since losing their greatest ally. Coupled with the mournful loss of Rengoku, “Homura” is easily the most heart-wrenching Demon Slayer theme.

1

Gurenge

Thanks to LiSA, one theme song comes to mind when one hears the words, Demon Slayer: the Season 1 opening.

Without question, there is only one song that defines the Demon Slayer franchise. While the anime has a quality lineup of opening and closing themes, “Gurenge” will forever be known as the quintessential Demon Slayer song. This song serves as the very first theme in the anime series, commencing Tanjiro’s journey to save his younger sister, Nezuko, from her fate of living as a demon for the rest of her life.

“I’ve found a reason to become strong. Take me with you, and let’s march forward.” – “Gurenge”

The Demon Slayer themes have come from an array of multi-talented artists, but only LiSA has made her mark on the franchise in such a unique way. In total, LiSA has contributed four songs to the series, claiming her role as the voice of Demon Slayer. “Gurenge” sets the tone for the entire series in a hauntingly beautiful piece. The bright animations and moments of light-hearted humor in the anime and manga don’t change the fact that Demon Slayer is a meaningful story about loss, regret, guilt, and familial responsibility. “Gurenge” represents these impactful themes and so much more, making it the best song in the franchise.
