The 10 Largest Harry Potter LEGO Sets Ever Made

The 10 Largest Harry Potter LEGO Sets Ever Made

The largest LEGO Harry Potter sets include some of the most intricate and enjoyable playsets made by the building block company, and some sets even exceed 4000 pieces. The toy line launched in 2001, alongside the release of the first film in the Harry Potter movie franchise, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, and for the most part has matched that release schedule. Sets continue to be made, either for new places and sequences from the movies or as reboots of popular sets, adding all the detail and updates that two decades of LEGO have produced.

While many LEGO enthusiasts have found that the LEGO midi-scaled style of sets is up their alley, there are still plenty of people in the “the bigger, the better” camp when it comes to creating worlds from their favorite magical movie series. Harry Potter in particular is positioned perfectly to have some enormous sets. The locations in Harry Potter are as memorable as the story and characters, with castles, neighborhoods, and giant carriages par for the course. These ideas and more make for some impressively sized LEGO sets that promise plenty of fun building and playing.

The Hogwarts Chamber of Secrets (76389) set is a three-piece set with a small, medium, and large building that depicts Harry’s journey to the Chamber of Secrets in the second movie. This 1176-piece set comes with 11 mini-figures, including a Nearly Headless Nick figure that glows in the dark. It also includes an exclusive golden Voldemort minifigure to celebrate 20 years of magic with LEGO Harry Potter. Scenes from the end of the Chamber of Secrets can be recreated thanks to the large Basilisk with rotatable joints.

There are plenty of hidden secrets, including six random wizard card tiles, of which 16 can be collected, a hidden trap slide that can send characters plummeting, and a movable stone face to release the Basilisk. The Great Hall even allows for the dueling club scene to be recreated, complete with tables that can fling hexed characters out of the set.

Hogwarts Castle (4842) is the 4th edition of the Hogwarts Castle sets and was released in 2010, but it has since been discontinued. Unlike previous incarnations, this Hogwarts Castle is not specific to any one movie and instead takes design inspiration from all the movies up to that point, which includes everything before The Deathly Hallows: Part 1. The set contains 11 minifigures: eight named characters, two Dementors, and one cat: Mrs. Norris.

The versions of Professor Snape, Professor McGonagall, Professor Dumbledore, Professor Flitwick, Filch, and the printed version of Filch’s cat, Mrs. Norris, are all exclusive to this set. The Astronomy Tower, Dumbledore’s Office, the Great Hall, and the Common Rooms (only Slytherin and Griffindor) are all included in exquisite detail. The set is no longer available from LEGO and must be purchased from a third-party vendor.

The LEGO Harry Potter sets are as much a part of the franchise as any of the movies, spin-offs, and theme parks. There’s something warm about them, and that LEGO boy with the scar on his plastic head may be as recognizable as Daniel Radcliffe. So it makes sense that LEGO made a set where fans could actually build that LEGO character, call it, “meta-construction”. The set has been discontinued but is available on Amazon and other retailers.

Hermione and Harry are both fully buildable and move just like normal LEGO pieces do, with rotatable hands that can grip fully built wands. These LEGO are more of a collector’s item than an actual set capable of being played with. However, they would still be an excellent addition to any fan’s collection who wants to memorialize one of the elements that helped make the Harry Potter franchise such a success.

The second set to depict the wizarding shopping mecca of Diagon Alley, Diagon Alley was one of the larger sets for its time, released in January 2011 and featuring 11 minifigures including Mr Ollivander and the Weasley twins in minifigure form for the first time in the series, as well as goblins with flesh colored-skin for the first time. This large set includes Ollivander’s Wand Shop, Gringotts Wizarding Bank, and Borgin and Burkes, despite the latter shop being located in Knockturn Alley in the rest of the series.

This discontinued set is a great set for builders who want more detail. There are plenty of stickers featuring unusual images and signage as well as plenty of wizard and witch hats, lamposts, cauldrons, and owl and rat figurines. Each of the buildings is separate from one another, so they can be configured in any way the builder wants.

The LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts Castle and Grounds is a 2660-piece mini-set that lets an enthusiast build out the entire Hogwarts Castle, including nearly every major scene from the books and movies. This is a model intended for adults and its attention to detail and difficulty make it as enjoyable a puzzle to put together as it does to look at and find every hidden secret and scene the makers created.

Most Harry Potter LEGO sets only depict a piece of the whole that is the Harry Potter world, but Hogwarts Castle and Grounds is the complete building. The Chamber of Secrets, the chess match, and the Whomping Willow with a tiny Ford Anglia are just a few of the memorable scenes from Harry Potter that never get old, depicted in LEGO’s unique block style.

The Hogwarts Icons – Collectors Edition, similar to the Harry Potter & Hermione Granger set, is only one large figure from the franchise, in this case, Hedwig the Owl. However, unlike the Harry and Hermione set, there are many more objects to build in this one, putting it at over 3000 pieces. The set also includes magical books, a wand, Harry’s glasses, the golden snitch, an invitation to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, as well as four glass bottles filled with magical herbs and elixirs from the series.

This set also includes three golden minifigures of Albus Dumbledore, Minerva McGonagall, and Rubeus Hagrid, all standing at attention in front of a special LEGO placard. The invitation to Hogwarts can even be written on to personalize the note. It’s a beautiful and fun set with many different areas to complete, ensuring it’s never a chore to build.

It’s a huge jump from the next largest LEGO Harry Potter set to Gringott’s Wizarding Bank, a massive 4803-piece set that depicts the famous goblin bank. Instead of focusing on one specific scene, this set includes all the memorable moments of the location. From Harry’s first visit in The Sorcerers’s Stone to the Horcrux heist in The Deathly Hallows – Part 2, it’s all present in a set that includes both the opulent, white above-ground area and the below-ground area with a track for the minifigures to ride in carts along.

The set includes 13 minifigures with some rare characters like Griphook, Bellatrix Lestrange/Hermione Granger using Polyjuice Potion, and several goblins. It also includes the Ukrainian Ironbelly dragon that is both posable and has room for three LEGO figures to sit on it, allowing enthusiasts to recreate the exact sequence from the Harry Potter story.

Perhaps the second most memorable visual of the Harry Potter franchise, after Hogwarts, is the Hogwarts Express, the red and black train that begins most films and books. This massive collector’s item has over 5000 pieces and 20 minifigures, including the likes of characters from four different scenes of the series, spanning the franchise. Each compartment of the train depicts a scene from the series: Harry, Ron, and Hermione’s first meeting; the Dementor and Professor Lupin; and Luna saving Harry from Malfoy, each with a placard denoting the scene.

On Platform 9¾ is the scene from the epilogue of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, with the older wizards and witches sending off the next generation for a new adventure. It combines the old and the new of the Harry Potter franchise and is a beautiful piece to boot. The train is semi-functional as well. Flip a switch, and it begins shaking as if ready to take the builder off to somewhere magical.

If the 2011 Diagon Alley set was a leap from the original set, this third version of the unbelievable Harry Potter Diagon Alley set (excluding the promotional micro set) is a pole vault. With 5544 pieces, it’s over double the size of the previous iteration. This set includes four large modular buildings that can be placed side by side to make a street seven storefronts wide. Ollivander’s Wand Shop, Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes, Florean Fortescue’s Ice Cream Parlor, Scribbulus Writing Implements, Flourish & Blotts, Quality Quidditch Supplies, and The Daily Prophet are all there.

Also included are 14 minifigures with four exclusives: Gilderoy Lockhart, Florean Fortescue, Lucius Malfoy, and the Daily Prophet photographer. Both the backs and fronts of each store are intricately detailed and hide a mechanism to play with or a secret to discover. Colorful and large, Diagon Alley makes for an exciting centerpiece.

Hogwarts Castle is for the completionist and, like the Hogwarts microset, this set has an incredible amount of detail, leaving nothing out. At over 6000 pieces, this set includes all the major moments from the books and movies as well as 27 microfigures of most of the major characters. It also includes four minifigures of the Hogwarts Founders: Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Salazar Slytherin, and Rowena Ravenclaw. From the Great Hall to Hagrid’s Hut to Snape’s Potion’s classroom, seven years of Hogwarts history are packed into the set.

With only a few colorful round pegs, the Hogwarts Castle set manages to create the exact feeling from the films and novels of being within the iconic grounds and magical buildings. The set is nearly two feet tall and over two feet long, making it an undertaking to build and move, but it’s worth it to have the definitive LEGO Harry Potter castle.

Harry Potter is a multimedia franchise about an orphaned boy who enrolls at Hogwarts School of Wizardry, where he learns the truth about himself, his family, and the terrible evil that haunts the magical world. Adapted from the novels, Harry Potter is an eight-episode film saga that follows the journey of Harry Potter and his friends, Hermoine Granger and Ron Weasley, as they navigate the tricky world of growing up, school life, and magic. Starting from year one and moving to their seventh year, the films chronicle the students’ time at Hogwarts while unfurling a sinister plot that centers around the unsuspecting Harry. With the return of the dark wizard, Voldemort, the students and professors at Hogwarts will fight to carry on as the world around them may change forever. Harry Potter has expanded beyond the world of its films and novels with several video games, a spin-off film series titled Fantastic Beasts, and even attractions at Universal Studios.
