Peaky Blinders Filming Start Confirmed By Series Creator

Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has confirmed when the upcoming movie is going to begin filming, giving a start window for the production. The original series follows a crime family led by Tommy Shelby through the late 1910s to early 1930s. Season 6 ended the show in April 2022, giving it a note of finality by the time it closed out. However, there was confirmation the proper finale of the series would happen in the form of a movie.

Speaking with NME, Knight confirmed the upcoming Peaky Blinders movie would begin filming in September of this year. The creator of the show teased Cillian Murphy’s return in the lead role, while also confirming the story has been decided and all other actors needed will be ready for the production to start. Check out what Knight had to say about the upcoming movie below:

It’s gonna happen. It’s gonna happen this September. I’m just doing the final polishes, which will continue up until the day before we start shooting. But we’re there. We’ve got everything sorted, we’ve got all the commitments we need, we are ready to go. I think the film is gonna be a step up again, and it’s gonna be great that Peaky fans can meet in one place and watch it. The budget will be bigger, but also because we know we’re ending this chapter, we’re all going to try to do our best. Cillian [Murphy] is really up for it. So I can’t wait for it to start shooting.

Everything To Expect From The Peaky Blinders Movie

Peaky Blinders season 6 ended with Tommy escaping death, almost convinced he was dying of tuberculoma only to realize the doctor had been a setup from Oswald Mosley. The final also set the stage for a key conflict between the Shelby family and Finn, who was banished following his attempt to kill Duke. While the show does end with many of its conflicts resolved, there is still plenty of room for the movie to showcase how the crime family’s story – and perhaps even their operations – come to a close.

With Muprhy reprising his role in the upcoming film, it appears Tommy will be taking the spotlight once again, indicating his involvement in whatever challenges his criminal underworld group faces next. Since the film already has everyone they need for filming, original Peaky Blinders cast members are bound to make a return. This means the stories of key characters like Arthur Shelby and Alfie Solomons among others will come to fitting conclusions during the movie. It also implies the whole crime family will get their stories concluded definitively this time.

The movie may also lay the groundwork for the planned Peaky Blinders spinoffs, including a Polly prequel and another set in Boston, Massachusetts. While it’s unclear how much the end of Tommy’s journey would tie into either of these shows, the film could serve as a transition point between the original series and what comes after. With plenty of mystery still surrounding what the plot of the movie will be, it appears more information will be available until after production begins later this year.
