Song Kang’s most recent K-drama role, Jeong Gu-won in My Demon, hilariously flips one of his most famous characters. 2023 ended on a high note for Song Kang’s career, as he starred in both Sweet Home season 2 and My Demon. The actor is now set to appear in Sweet Home season 3, which premiers in 2024. Song Kang’s next K-drama after My Demon and Sweet Home remains to be announced, but the star has been on an impressive streak since 2019’s Love Alarm.

With some of the best K-dramas of his generation in his resumé, Song Kang has established himself as one of Korea’s biggest stars. The actor has even become known as the “son of Netflix” because of how many of his shows became hits on the platform. My Demon’s Gu-won was quite different from Song Kang’s previous characters, particularly Lee Shi-woo from Forecasting Love and Weather.

Song Kang’s My Demon Role Is The Opposite Of His Forecasting Love And Weather Character

Gu-won has nothing to do with Shi-woo

In My Demon, Song Kang plays Gu-won, a 200-year-old demon whose mission is to offer deals to humans in exchange for their souls. While Gu-won was once human, he has long lost most of his human traits and is now a cold, literally soulless being who has no appreciation for the human race. Quite the contrary, Gu-won is not a fan of humans at all. The demon’s lack of energy becomes even more noticeable once he is paired with Do-hee, played by Kim Yoo-jung. It’s only after a couple of episodes that Gu-won begins to show any signs of affection toward Do-hee.

In Forecasting Love and Weather, on the other hand, Song Kang’s character is a young, energetic man who likes to hang out and make friends. Shi-woo is exceptional at his job despite being one of the youngest members of the team, but he also likes to enjoy life outside of work. After Shi-woo’s girlfriend breaks up with him for reasons he doesn’t understand, he soon sees himself falling for Jin Ha-kyung, a more experienced member of the team who has recently broken up with her partner too. From their personalities to their relationship skills, Gu-won and Shi-woo are complete opposites.

How My Demon Compares To Forecasting Love And Weather

Song Kang’s most recent romantic dramas are very different from each other

My Demon is a funny, charming K-drama that combines rom-com tropes with supernatural elements. Song Kang plays the titular demon, which is curious considering he plays a monster in Sweet Home. My Demon’s premise of a demon who has to cut an unusual deal with a human and enter a fake relationship made for some hilarious moments between Song Kang and Kim Yoo-jung, both of whom delivered great performances. Gu-won and Do-hee were arguably the best K-drama couple of 2023. 2022’s Forecasting Love and Weather also told an engaging love story but in a very different context.

Netflix’s Sweet Home Replacement Gives Its Protagonist The Happy Ending Song Kang’s Hyun-su May Never Get

Netflix’s perfect replacement for Sweet Home shows what would be the perfect ending for Song Kang’s Hyun-su, although it will likely never happen.

Whereas My Demon was a fantasy K-drama featuring all-powerful demons and life contracts, Forecasting Love and Weather was a grounded take on the challenges adulthood offers. The 2022 rom-com starring Song Kang and Park Min-young followed the weather forecasting team at KMA and explored their professional and personal lives. The series started with both Jin Ha-kyung and Lee Shi-woo becoming single after their partners cheated on them, leading to a complicated love story between two very different lead characters. My Demon’s premise is funnier by default, whereas Forecasting Love and Weather is a more serious, relatable story.

Despite having been in a lot of popular shows since 2017, Song Kang’s most famous character is arguably Cha Hyun-su from Netflix’s Sweet Home. The horror K-drama premiered globally on the streaming platform in December 2020 and became one of the most-watched non-English shows on Netflix at the time, leading to a two-season renewal. It took three years for Sweet Home to return with another season, but fortunately, Song Kang appeared in three shows in the meantime. The end of 2023 confirmed how massive his career had become, with Sweet Home 2 and My Demon premiering around the same time.
