What Happened In Kaiju No. 8 Episode #4
As the protagonist gets the hang of his Kaiju abilities, a threat emerges
In Kaiju No. 8 episode #5, “Fortitude 9.8”, despite Kafka getting a second wind, Kikoru defeated the remaining Kaiju before he had a chance to do anything. The exam was poised to end on an anticlimactic note, but suddenly, a humanoid Kaiju capable of speech appeared and severely wounded Kikoru. Kikoru barely survived thanks to her suit, but things only got worse when the humanoid Kaiju brought all the deceased Kaiju back to life before departing to parts unknown.
Everyone was told to evacuate and let Mina and Hoshina handle the revived Kaiju, but Kikoru, spurred by memories of the heavy expectations placed on her by her father, forced herself to keep fighting. That stubbornness was poised to get Kikoru killed, but Kafka showed up at just the right moment to save her with his Kaiju powers. Kafka defeated the Kaiju that was attacking Kikoru with one attack, and according to one of the scientists monitoring the exam, Kafka generated a power level of fortitude 9.8, one of the highest levels in the history of Kaiju.
After the revived Kaiju was dealt with, Kikoru took credit for defeating the one that attacked her to preserve Kafka’s secret. Kafka, meanwhile, briefly reunited with Mina when she thanked him for helping Kikoru, but he didn’t say much else to her because he felt like he needed to officially become an officer first. Later, the humanoid Kaiju was surprised to learn that he failed to kill anyone, and the episode ended with the reveal that the humanoid Kaiju had taken on the disguise of one of Kafka’s co-workers.
