Wolverine will abandon the X-Men for his old wolf pack in an all-new solo series that sees Logan unleash the beast inside himself. Set during the upcoming From the Ashes relaunch of Marvel’s X-Men titles, the latest Wolverine ongoing series returns Logan to the wilderness of Canada. There he will find himself in a new war against an ancient villain.

Marvel has announced that the new Wolverine series will be launching this September from writer Saladin Ahmed and artist Martín Cóccolo. Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Wolverine, the series picks up the threads from the devastating Fall of X event, as well as the ultra-violent Sabretooth War storyline going on in Wolverine’s current solo title. With the mutant nation of Krakoa gone, Logan will turn his back on humanity, mutants and his teammates, and go into a self-imposed exile in the wilds of Canada.

However, he will not find the peace he is seeking, as a new war is brewing and old enemies will come back to haunt him.

Wolverine Battles an Ancient Evil in His New Series

While Logan attempts to retreat into the wilderness, his old friend Nightcrawler will not let him lose himself. The series will see Kurt Wagner trying to remind Wolverine that he is part of a family in the X-Men. And Logan may need that family if he is to survive the fight that is in store for him when his most hated foes come after him. Meanwhile, a new existential threat is brewing as Wolverine will find himself up against an ancient villain who has “been bubbling under the surface of the Marvel Universe since the days of myth.” If this evil is unleashed, it could “dramatically alter the scope of Wolverine’s storied history and force him to prove himself a hero like never before.”

Logan is simultaneously a mythic hero, an abused animal, and a man of flesh, blood, and adamantium,” Ahmed said. “Our story is about what happens when these parts of him all pull in opposite directions – and threaten to rip Logan to pieces that won’t come back together again.”

Marvel’s New Wolverine Series Will Rewrite His Lore

The new era for the X-Men brings with it a lot of changes for Wolverine. He’s already suffered the loss of his home on Krakoa, his son Akihiro, and his faith in Charles Xavier and his dream. How much more can he endure? Well, apparently, he has more seismic shifts ahead of him. Marvel promises that the first issue of the new series will include a “key first appearance” and a “major addition to the lore of Wolverine.”

This new fight will force Wolverine to reawaken the animal inside himself. As a killer lurks in the woods of Canada, Logan will find himself brought to the brink of berserker rage. He will need Nightcrawler to convince him that he’s still capable of doing good, but before long he will have to unleash his claws and push himself to the limit.

I could talk for hours about why I decided to take this relaunch, but you want my real answer? It’s Wolverine. That’s it,” Cóccolo said. “It’s a dream come true for me, and I can’t believe I get to tell my younger self every day that I’m drawing Wolverine. Saladin’s exploration of the character and the story is incredibly exciting as a concept as well as visually engaging, and I can’t wait for people to finally see it!”

From the Ashes will also see Wolverine joining up with Rogue’s New Orleans-based team in Uncanny X-Men. It’s unclear if the events of this new series take place before or after that. But one thing is for certain: as the X-Men once again find themselves fighting to protect a world that hates and fears them, Wolverine will show once and for all why he’s the best there is at what he does.

Wolverine

The human mutant Wolverine (a.k.a. Logan) was born James Howlett, blessed with a superhuman healing factor, senses, and physiology. Subjecting himself to experimentation to augment his skeleton and claws with adamantium, Logan is as deadly as he is reckless, impulsive, and short-tempered. Making him the X-Men’s wildest and deadliest member, and one of Marvel Comics’ biggest stars.
