Warning: The following contains spoilers for I Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince, so I Can Take My Time Perfecting My Magical Ability episode 5!!

Fans of action shonen anime are undoubtedly missing out on some incredible fight scenes that they would undoubtedly have appreciated if they hadn’t initially been turned away from the implied direction of I Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince so I Can Take My Time Perfecting My Magical Ability. The isekai genre is definitely an acquired taste, and since the industry keeps churning them out in large numbers every season, most anime-goers who would have already been inclined to avoid them now generally feel more compelled to do so just on principle alone. This is especially the case if the imposing isekai has a ridiculously long title.

Of course, I was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince does follow many of the same conventions that commonly saturate the isekai genre. This partly justifies their rejection of it, though the series does immediately give a fun twist on the tamer and familiar trope, which even persists to this day. Moreover, part of its formula would appeal to action enthusiasts since it involves the eponymous reincarnated 7th prince testing out his magical abilities in epic battles against one boss demon or monster.

Not only are these battles very visually spectacular to the point of possibly even impressing Jujutsu Kaisen fans, but they build upon common shonen tropes that were popularized in Dragon Ball, more notably, Dragon Ball Z.

Any Fan of Dragon Ball Z Would Even Like This Isekai

Despite the genre being looked down upon, this new isekai series has potential

Without counting the first fight in episode #1, which served to establish the forced and very one-sided relationship between the 7th prince Lloyd de Saloum and his demon familiar, Grim, two fierce battles have so far taken place in I Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince. The first of them, a battle against a lich, highlights two Dragon Ball formulas. The first is the one where Goku appears at the last moment to save his friends after being inadvertently preoccupied, which is emulated in I was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince with Lloyd and Tao.

The second involves the trope where Goku repurposes techniques for his own use after just witnessing them in battle. However, the rate at which Lloyd accomplishes this here is much more extreme, whereby he not only combines two completely different fighting styles simultaneously that had never been merged together but then uses them to augment each other separately and even create new combo techniques.

All of this is explored and expanded upon in the second fight against a demon called Pazuzu on a much grander scale. First, Lloyd must come and rescue numerous of his friends instead of just one, all of whom had to fight alone for a longer period of time without him, thus prolonging their subsequent suffering. Then, how much Lloyd multiplies numerous levels of a previously understood type of magic is compounded to a more incredible degree.

After boasting about his then-unheard-of ability to cast 20 spells, Lloyd proceeds to launch an attack that multiples this by 60 – by casting 240 spells per minute for five minutes. Many of these individual spells within this augmented state are also compounded further. Some of them include all four of the strongest magical types, none of which had been even mentioned before, which then undergo 100 rotations, all while tripling the speed of his high-velocity casting.

In the end, I Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince so I Can Take My Time Perfecting My Magical Ability is clearly an isekai and follows so closely to conventions that those who are critical or uninterested in the genre will steer clear of it, but unfortunately, those of them who can’t get enough of visually spectacular fights that even follow in the footsteps of the king of fighting shonen itself will miss out.
