The expanded role of Criminal Minds: Evolution‘s most controversial new character means more chaos for the BAU. Despite the extended break and move to Paramount+, the revival is technically a continuation of the CBS series. Criminal Minds: Evolution has its old show’s cast intact, albeit with a couple of absences, such as Spencer Reid and Matt Simmons. However, since it was still a new start, with a darker version of the police procedural, it still had to introduce new players. Some of them were allies, others were foes. Meanwhile, there are a few that are quite difficult to pinpoint.

One of the major changes to Criminal Minds: Evolution‘s storytelling is its format. Instead of weekly cases, the whole season is devoted to a single storyline, although the season 1 finale laid the groundwork for the BAU’s next mystery about the so-called Gold Star. Aside from Emily Prentiss’ core team of profilers, who all survived the ordeal of taking down Sicarius’ serial killer network, Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 is also bringing back some supporting characters, including Zach Gilford’s Elias Voit, and Ryan James-Hatanaka’s Tyler Green — the latter’s return may have bigger repercussions for what’s ahead for the BAU.

Tyler Green Is Joining The BAU In Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2

Somehow, The BAU Needs Green’s Help.

As previously reported, Hatanaka will not only return as Green in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2, but he will have an expanded role during the procedural’s sophomore year. For context, Green was indirectly involved in the Sicarius case and was the one who roped Penelope Garcia into coming back to the BAU to solve it. The pair had a tumultuous relationship, made much more complex when they started getting intimate. Per the official information about Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2, the “BAU recruits Tyler as a consultant, utilizing his psychological operations training on their latest season-long investigation.”

Green was already controversial when he debuted in the procedural for a couple of reasons. He essentially manipulated Garcia into coming back to the BAU, and then she got in trouble with Prentiss and the team for subsequently sleeping with him. Green’s more prominent presence in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 could result in more tension between him and Garcia, as well as the rest of the BAU. His return could also be detrimental to the hopes that Garcia and Luke Alvez will finally get together after their disastrous first date.

Why The BAU Needs To Be More Cautious Around Green

There’s Still A Lot To Learn About Green.

FBI bringing in Green means that the BAU is in desperate need of his help in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2. Prentiss’ team is already undermanned. Unfortunately, Shemar Moore’s SWAT update kills the chances of Derek Morgan appearing anytime soon, while no word yet on Reid and Simmons’ comeback. The profilers should remain vigilant when dealing with Green. Considering his background, he may have secret ties to the Gold Star mystery, and not in a good way. Until the BAU is sure that he can be fully trusted, Garcia and her team should keep a close eye on him.
