The ending of Under the Bridge episode 5 raises big questions like what Kelly and Josephine plan to do with Dusty. This episode starts where Under the Bridge episode 4 ends with Reena and Dusty discovering the boots in Kelly’s boots. As the show goes on, Kelly, Reena, and Dusty decide to go to Mexico. Beforehand, they decide to blame Warren by reporting him for Reena’s murder.

The teens start making plans, and Rebecca offers to help them in order to gain their trust. These four go to the space where the Crips hang out in order to get money. Everyone suspects Rebecca of being a police officer, so she drops acid with Warren in order to prove she’s trustworthy. While in an intoxicated state, Rebecca tells Warren about her brother Gabe, and Warren tells Rebecca about Reena’s murder. This entire episode brings up multiple questions about the motivation of Under the Bridge characters.

Jo & Kelly Tell Dusty They’re “Going To Mexico”: What Are They Really Planning?

“Going To Mexico” Has An Underlying Message

Kelly and Dusty sit on the bed in Under the Bridge

Throughout Under the Bridge episode 5 Dusty, Kelly, and Josephine plan to go to Mexico in order to escape from the police. They decide on a ferry and get the money, making it seem like they intend to follow through. However, when they approach Dusty about Mexico at the end, their tone and expressions make it clear there is an underlying meaning to their words. There’s a looming threat to Dusty’s safety. Combining this with the fact that they believe she is going to crack under pressure, it’s likely that they are planning to find a way to silence her.

This could be something as simple as getting her alone and verbally threatening her. They could beat her up and tell her to shut up, an action that would match their past behaviors. Alternatively, in the worst-case scenario, they could try to kill Dusty to silence her forever. This would fit more with Kelly’s personality than it would with Josephine’s personality. Jo talks a big talk, but she doesn’t have the depravity to actually follow through on a murder threat. However, with the influence of Kelly, Josephine might stoop to murderous behaviors she otherwise wouldn’t display.

Why Dusty Only Signed Warren’s Name (& Not Kelly’s)

Dusty Needed To Preserve Her Alliances And Protect Herself

When Dusty goes to the police department, Cam confronts her about the phone call she made to report Warren Glowatski as the killer. Rather than recant, Dusty doubles down on her assertion, at which point Cam gives her a witness statement to sign. The officer clearly explains that the police will arrest whomever she writes down as the killer. Ultimately, Dusty signs the statement for two reasons. Firstly, she agreed with Kelly and Josephine that none of them would turn on each other.

By pointing the finger at Warren, Dusty upholds her word, proving her trustworthiness. This creates an obligation for Kelly and Josephine to have Dusty’s back and help her evade legal trouble. She also proves that she can be a part of the Crip Mafia Cartel. There’s also an element of self-preservation related to Dusty putting down Warren’s name and not Kelly’s. Warren is relatively tame, being soft-spoken for someone who commits murder. He doesn’t seem inclined to point a finger or speak up. As such, he’s a safe target.

However, Kelly is a loose cannon with a tendency for vengeance and outbursts. If Dusty put Kelly’s name down on the paper, the latter teen would have ample opportunity to blame people like Dusty and Josephine, both of whom had a hand in the attack but not the murder. Moreover, since she has Reena’s shoes, Kelly would have ammunition with which she could frame the other girls. It would be simple for Kelly to place the shoes in her friends’ rooms with how often she hangs out at Seven Oaks in Under the Bridge.

How Warren & Kelly’s Stories About Reena’s Killing Compare To Their Real-Life Statements

Warren And Kelly Told Multiple Versions Of The Story In Real Life

In Under the Bridge episode 5, both Kelly and Warren make statements about the murder of Reena. Since they both are Reena Virk’s real-life killers and nobody saw what happened, their word is all that can be relied upon. However, there are some variations between what they said happened in the Hulu miniseries and their actual statements.

In the book, Syreeta overheard Kelly telling Tara, Jodene, and Maya that she drowned Reena by stepping on Reena’s head. This matches up with her statement that she held Reena’s head underwater by stepping on her neck for many minutes while smoking a cigarette. However, she also told the police that she had no part in the murder, which is a direct contrast to her story in Under the Bridge.

Warren’s statement in Hulu’s Under the Bridge about the crime says that he and Kelly followed her over the bridge because Kelly wanted to see if Reena was sorry. After forcing Reena to take off her shoes, Kelly started kicking Reena repeatedly. According to Warren, he said that they should go, but Kelly continued to beat Reena until the teen was almost unconscious. This matches to varying degrees with the story that Warren told in real life. According to Godfrey’s Under the Bridge, Warren initially denied any involvement.

However, the story Warren tells to Rebecca in the show mostly closely aligns with the version he told to the police officers during the investigation. He went over thinking Kelly was going to confront but not kill Reena. Then Kelly beat Reena to the point of unconsciousness, all the while Warren was telling her “Stop. Let’s Go.” In real life, Warren stays pretty close to his story of innocence all the way up to the point of entering jail and going through the restorative justice program. At this point, his story changes again to include more of the truth.

What Rebecca’s Reveal About Her Brother Means For Her Role In Under The Bridge’s Case

Reena And Gabe’s Manner Of Death Is The Same In Under The Bridge

Gabe, Rebecca, and Cam as kids in a polaroid picture in Under the Bridge

One big question throughout Under the Bridge is what happened to Rebecca Godfrey’s brother, Gabe. At the end of Under the Bridge episode 5, she reveals what exactly happened, providing insight into her psyche. When she was 13 years old, her brother died in the ocean. She exhibits signs of survivor’s guilt, stating that she should have drowned. She also believes that she could have done something to stop it. All of this plays into why she’s so connected to the Reena Virk murder.

In Hulu’s Under the Bridge, she feels personally connected because both Gabe and Reena died by drowning. She also looks at Warren and sees her brother, a fact that’s made clear by her hallucination while on acid. In her mind, if she somehow solves Reena’s case and helps Warren onto a better path, she can feel less guilty about her brother’s death.
