Spy x Family contains a number of hysterical tropes that improve the series and make it entertaining. Some examples of these include Anya’s adoration of peanuts, the goofy facial expressions she makes in certain situations, and Nightfall’s hopeless crush on Loid Forger. However, sometimes certain running gags reach a point where they begin to define a character’s entire personality, giving them little chance to grow beyond the joke.

Unfortunately, Yor Forger has fallen victim to this phenomenon, seen in both the Spy x Family anime and manga and the 2024 Spy x Family: Code White film that was released in movie theaters. Throughout each of these different depictions of the lovable Forger family, one common trope for Yor’s character shows up again and again: her outbursts of jealousy and insecurity when seeing Loid with another woman.

This gag has been appearing since fairly early on in the series, when Yor and Loid first began their fake “marriage” that Loid was required to enter as a part of Operation Strix.

Yor Forger’s Jealous Outbursts And Insecurity Have Become Running Gags

These tropes have appeared too often in the series and are a major subplot of the film

Yor looks furious and holds Anya protectively in Spy x Family

Since the first few episodes of the Spy x Family series, Yor has experienced great distress and feelings of inadequacy surrounding her position as Loid’s fake wife. He has reassured her consistently that he would never replace her as his wife, and although the marriage is all for show anyway, Yor still remains incredibly on edge most of the time, fearing Loid could leave her at any moment. These fears were only heightened when Loid and Fiona Frost, a fellow agent called Nightfall, posed as a fake couple in a tennis match as part of a special spy mission.

Yor worried incessantly that Loid would choose Fiona, even though he was evidently disinterested in her and had directly rebuffed her romantic advances on many different occasions. She participated in a game of tennis with the other woman and although Yor beat her opponent, this achievement did not alleviate her fears or keep her mind from running wild with thoughts of Loid running off with Fiona. Loid put noticeable effort into calming Yor’s insecurities, taking her on a romantic date and reaffirming his promise to stay with her. This is the first significant instance of Yor’s jealousy, but definitely not the last.

The Jealous Wife Trope Has Begun To Overshadow Other Important Aspects Of Yor’s Character

Much of Yor’s backstory, assassin work, and other personality traits have gone unexplained in favor of this overdone gag

A major subplot in Spy x Family Code: White consisted of Yor seeing Loid speaking to Nightfall in an alleyway and grabbing the woman’s hat as it almost blew off in a breeze. She interpreted this interaction as evidence that Loid was leaving her. The situation wound up playing out in a similar manner as last time, with Yor breaking down and Loid consoling her and offering her reassurance. The trope was indeed humorous and entertaining the first few times, but it is becoming overdone and limiting Yor’s potential as a character, overshadowing other parts of her fascinating and dynamic personality.

Yor is secretly a talented assassin, which has been occasionally depicted in the series, but not nearly as often as Anya’s adventures and Loid’s missions. While the other Forger family members have been developing further as characters and moving past previous tropes, Yor seems to be settling into the same role every time a subplot focuses on her primarily. Some fan-favorite scenes include Yor’s stellar assassin work, such as her defending her family in brutal, merciless fights. One example is when she protected Anya from terrorists using her incredible physical skill, shocking her opponents who underestimated her abilities.

Yor Ignites a Tube of Lipstick in Spy x Family CODE: White

Yor Forger strikes an excellent balance between intense strength and compassion and loving care for her family and those around her. Her multifaceted nature, encompassing both ruthless assassin and kindhearted mother, makes her an intriguing and unpredictable character. Fans cannot get enough of her, as evidenced by her astounding second place victory in Crunchyroll’s 2023 anime crush poll. However, various details of Yor’s life are unknown, and there is much speculation surrounding the parts of her life not shown on screen. This presents a perfect opportunity for Spy x Family to delve deeper into Yor’s character and story, leaving running gags behind.

Tatsuya Endo is already making this change with his other characters, such as Anya. In the manga, he is pivoting away from constantly portraying Anya as a bad student with poor grades, and allowing her to grow in that area and finally achieve academic success through hard work. In the same vein, it is plausible that Yor could follow a similar trajectory, developing confidence and security in herself and thus, diminishing the prominence of this jealousy trope. It will definitely be entertaining and fascinating to see how Yor grows and what changes to her character are made as Spy x Family progresses.
