Over the past few years, Netflix has been taking great strides to improve its reputation as an anime streaming service. Not only have they finally gotten into the habit of properly simulcasting new anime, but they’ve been greatly expanding their overall library to have a much larger selection of old and new programming, thus creating far more incentive to use them over other streaming sites.

Netflix has done a lot to become a better anime streaming service, and that’s about to get even better. It was previously announced that Netflix would be adding a lot of new titles throughout 2024, and May 2024, in particular, sees an incredible lineup of licensed and original anime coming to Netflix.

There has never been a better time to be an anime fan subscribed to Netflix, and with some of the specific anime coming to Netflix in May, there are bound to be even more people who fall in that category.

Yu Yu Hakusho Is Finally On Netflix In Its Entirety

Anime series by Studio Pierrot; Based on the manga by Yoshihiro Togashi

Hiei, Yusuke, Kurama, and Kuwabara in casual attire

Studio Pierrot’s Yu Yu Hakusho is the classic anime starring Yusuke Urameshi, a delinquent student who, in a surprise moment of selflessness, saves a child from being run over by a truck at the cost of his own life. Yusuke is eventually revived as thanks for his good deed, and from there, he’s tasked with becoming the spirit world’s spirit detective and developing powerful spiritual abilities to protect humanity from evil demons alongside an ever-growing group of friends.

Yu Yu Hakusho is one of the most classic shonen anime, and it’s great to finally have it on Netflix in its entirety. Yu Yu Hakusho’s stellar writing and animation made it one of the best action anime of the 90s, and over 30 years later, that hasn’t changed in the slightest. It’s an anime that any action fan would be remiss to ignore, and thanks to Netflix, it’s easier than ever to do so.

Mob Psycho 100 Is Finally On Netflix In Full

Anime series by Studio Bones; Based on the manga by ONE

Collage of characters from Mob Psycho

Studio Bones’ Mob Psycho 100 is an incredible anime that centers around Shigeo Kageyama, a near-emotionless boy who leaves so little impression that he’s earned the nickname “Mob”, the Japanese expression for NPC. However, that’s largely on purpose as Mob actively suppresses his emotions to keep his powerful psychic abilities in check. Even so, Mob wants to learn how to better balance his emotions with his powers both to get his crush to like him and to better protect his friends and family from the evil spirits and espers constantly causing trouble.

While manga writer ONE is best known for creating One-Punch Man, Mob Psycho 100 is just as deserving of praise, if not more so. Not only does the anime feature some of the best animation of any animated project in recent years, but Mob Psycho 100’s coming-of-age narrative surrounding Mob is written with a perfect balance of humor and maturity, and seeing the way his character evolves throughout the series is nothing but satisfying. There are very few anime written as well as Mob Psycho 100, and it’s great that it can now be streamed on Netflix in its entirety.

TP Bon Wonderfully Modernizes A Classic Story From The Creators Of Doraemon

Anime series by Studio Bones; Based on the manga by Fujiko F. Fujio

T.P Bon

Studio Bones’ T.P Bon is a modern adaptation of the classic manga by Fujiko F. Fujio, the duo behind the legendary anime franchise Doraemon. The anime stars Bon Namihara, an aggressively average boy who accidentally witnesses the time manipulations of the secret organization known as the Time Patrol, and to keep their activities a secret, Bon is made into an agent of the Time Patrol and joins them in correcting various disturbances in history.

Despite being from the creators of Doraemon, T.P Bon is a completely different story in terms of both tone and overall presentation. T.P Bon presents a dark and mature time travel story without losing the charm and humor of Fujiko F. Fujio’s writing, and with Studio Bones’ stellar animation, their signature art style is perfectly modernized with incredible fluidity. The first half of the anime has already been one of the best anime to drop on Netflix in May, and the second half in July is sure to be a perfect follow-up.

My Oni Girl Is Looking To Be A Delightful Fantasy Romance

Anime film by Studio Colorido; Directed by Tomotaka Shibayama

My Oni Girl

Studio Colorido’s My Oni Girl is an upcoming anime film starring Hiiragi, an awkward young boy who always does what people ask of him out of a fear of being disliked by his peers. This leads to Hiiragi helping the free-spirited Tsumugi go on a journey to find her mother, and things are further complicated by Tsumugi being an oni and drawing the attention of violent demons on their journey.

Studio Colorido has produced a wide variety of quality films like Penguin Highway and Burn the Witch, and My Oni Girl is looking to be another great product of theirs. Not only does it look to have a great balance of comedy, drama, and heart, but My Oni Girl looks to have great art and animation both in and out of the explicitly fantastical scenes, so it’s sure to be great from both a narrative and a technical standpoint. Netflix typically has a good reputation for original anime, and My Oni Girl is looking to be another winner for them.

Netflix Is Slowly Becoming One Of The Best Homes For Anime

Netflix has never been better for anime

The biggest takeaway from these announcements and others is, of course, that Netflix is becoming one of the best homes for anime. It’s one thing for Netflix to be putting out more original content, but now they’ve taken strides to expand their general library to include both old and new mainstream hits, something that’s always been a problem for them in the past. Overall, Netflix’s May lineup is another great step in them fixing their issue of a lack of anime content, and the results of that are great to see.

What makes things even better is that this isn’t the end of Netflix’s new slew of anime for 2024. Not only are Spy x Family season 1 and more Black Clover set to come to Netflix later this year, but October will also see the premiere of the highly-anticipated Dandadan anime, although Dandadan will also be streaming on Crunchyroll. Regardless, all of the new titles being added to Netflix, both old and new, are doing wonders for their reputation as an anime streaming service, and by the end of the year, they’re sure to be one of the best around.
