Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Confirms At Least One BOTW 2 Theory

Nintendo recently revealed the title of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom during a Nintendo Direct, and a new trailer for the upcoming sequel confirms a popular fan theory. The highly anticipated fantasy game will be a direct sequel to 2017’s Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which was universally praised for its open-ended game design. Little is currently known about The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, but its Nintendo Direct trailer did confirm one key gameplay mechanic.

When it was released in 2017 fans were immediately enamored by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The epic fantasy game is extremely open-ended, giving players the opportunity to freely explore the ruins of Hyrule and complete objectives in nearly any order they choose. There are also various solutions to each puzzle and enemy encounter, with Link’s wide range of tools and abilities making him an extremely flexible explorer. Immediately after the game’s launch fans began clamoring for Breath of the Wild 2, which Nintendo tentatively announced in 2019. Now the developer has officially announced the real title of Zelda: BOTW 2, and a brand-new trailer teases various new locations and abilities to discover.

The next entry in the long-running Zelda franchise is The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. While few specifics are known about the game’s plot or gameplay, trailers have provided some hints about what players can expect from the game. Tears of the Kingdom seems to focus on a fractured land floating high in the sky, with multiple trailers showing Link leaping from a cliffside to dive through the clouds toward Hyrule below. Various new powers have also been glimpsed, with one gameplay clip from last year showing Link phase through solid rock and making objects reverse backward in time. BOTW 2 gameplay patents from last year tease even more new mechanics, and the game’s most recent trailer proved a popular fan theory correct.

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Will Include A Flying Mount

Just as many fans expected, the newest trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom confirms that Link will be able to soar across the sky on a flying mount. The exciting trailer sees the Hero of Hyrule leap from a floating island and hurtle towards the ground. However, before he falls too far Link lands gracefully atop a mechanical flying creature or vehicle that carries him through the sky. Even before this reveal many fans suggested that BOTW 2 should bring back Loftwings, the flying mounts featured in Skyward Sword, due to the upcoming sequel’s emphasis on floating islands.

While little is officially known about The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, it is obvious that the lands floating above Hyrule will be a key part of the experience. Many fans already guessed that Link will be able to use a flying mount to traverse the skies, and the title’s latest trailer proves that assumption correct. Set for release in May 2023, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will let players venture high above Breath of the Wild’s tallest peak.
