Zack Snyder Explains Why There Will Never Be A Director’s Cut Of His 2021 Netflix Movie

Zack Snyder Explains Why There Will Never Be A Director’s Cut Of His 2021 Netflix Movie

Zack Snyder says that there will never be a director’s cut of Army of the Dead. The creative mind behind both Man of Steel and Zack Snyder’s Justice League, the director is well-known for making extended cuts of his films. At the end of this year, Snyder will release Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire, which Snyder has already said will receive an R-rated director’s cut along with its 2024 follow-up.

As reported by Collider, Snyder explains why one of his Netflix movies, Army of the Dead, does not need a director’s cut. He claims that the zombie movie does not need a director’s cut because Netflix was “so cool with what [he] wanted to do.” Snyder said that as he was making the film, the only thing he was asked to “take out was the zombie penis.” Check out the full quote from Snyder below:

“But the cool thing was with Netflix, and I had this experience on Army [of the Dead], was that they were so cool with what I wanted to do. That’s why there’s not a director’s cut of Army, because it was really just the movie. They never said, ‘Oh…’ I think the only thing they wanted me to take out was the zombie penis because we had it in the opening credits. One of the Chippendale’s dancers had this huge cock with a bite taken out of it. I had a shot of it, and they were like, ‘Look, is there any way…?” And I was like, ‘Alright.'”

Why No Army Of The Dead Directors’ Cut Comes As A Surprise?

The update on Army of the Dead‘s director’s cut comes as a surprise, given Snyder’s history with doing so for many of his movies. Zack Snyder’s Justice League is the most well-known to receive this treatment, which came with fierce fan campaigns to push Warner Bros. to drop his version. As for the 2021 release of the zombie movie, Snyder was originally slated to receive a Netflix series titled Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas. This show would have expanded the universe of Army of the Dead, but it was never completed.

Given this expansion prospect, it is interesting that Snyder still felt that he was able to get all of his content into the original Army of the Dead film. That said, Snyder has not fully put the universe of Army of the Dead to rest, even if he is satisfied with the movie’s 2021 cut. Ahead of Rebel Moon‘s release, the director claimed that the upcoming sci-fi movie takes place in the same universe as Army of the Dead. He even went so far as to say that there is an alien character in Rebel Moon that is “one of the characters from the animatic.”

As a result, the world expansion likely allows Snyder to be still satisfied with the universe of Army of the Dead in the absence of the animated spinoff. The director has also teased the development of Army of the Dead 2, which will be a “twisted’ movie that expands the franchise. The zombie film may never need Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead, but further content for the franchise is likely far from over.
