Zack Snyder Addresses Rebel Moon Reviews After Netflix Movie’s 21% Rotten Tomatoes Score

Zack Snyder has responded to reviews of Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire, following the Netflix original’s 21% Rotten Tomatoes score. The first of a two-part movie, the sci-fi film follows Kora, a former member of the Imperium, who begins gathering warriors from across the galaxy to protect her new home after the tyrannical group tries to claim it as their own. The movie is Snyder’s wost-reviewed on Rotten Tomatoes, with nearly every aspect of the film drawing criticism.

Speaking with Empire Magazine, Snyder acknowledged Rebel Moon‘s negative reviews. He addressed how sharp the reviews were for the movie before speculating what critics might think of the forthcoming director’s cuts for both movies. Check out what Snyder had to say below:

I don’t really have a rebuttal to the reviews. For whatever reason, the reaction to my movies is very polarising, and it always has been. The movie, it doesn’t seem like there’s that much in it that would warrant such visceral responses.

It will be interesting to see what the [critics] say about the director’s cuts.

Can Rebel Moon Part Two Get Better Reviews Than Part One?

The most critical responses to Rebel Moon have pointed out how the movie is a mixture of familiar sci-fi tropes that don’t do anything new, coupled with a lack of development for its ensemble cast of characters. As for the story, it too has been criticized for being underdeveloped and rushed despite the film’s 134-minute runtime. With many critics unfavorably contrasting the movie with Star Wars, it doesn’t bode well for the release of Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver on April 19, 2024.

The first film acted as setup for what’s to come, with Kora gathering a variety of intergalactic warriors to help defend the moon of Veldt. Its follow-up promises a larger focus on action, something that might help make the second movie more exciting than the first. However, while Rebel Moon – Part One‘s ending sets up a memorable battle, the lack of story and character development in the film may cause Part Two to be less emotionally resonant than it could be.

However, it’s still possible the movie’s director’s cuts will end up getting more positive reviews, since they’ll be more complete films aligned with Snyder’s vision. However, Rebel Moon‘s reliance on sci-fi tropes seen time and time again appears to be a fundamental issue with the movie as a whole. This means it will still feel generic even if its story and characters become more well-developed. It remains to be seen just how different the R-rated versions of the movies will be, and if they can bolster critical reception.
