Spider-Man has always had some tough critics, but the person most harsh on the Webslinger has always been J. Jonah Jameson. The reason behind Jameson’s hatred has always been a bit ambiguous, but one version of the hero, Spider-Man 2099’s Miguel O’Hara, was able to tell Jameson exactly where his hatred of Spider-Man leaves him in the history books.

During the events of Spider-Man 2099 Meets Spider-Man by Peter David and Rick Leonardi, Miguel O’Hara finds himself stranded in the past, trying to figure out what day it is. He heads over to the Daily Bugle, – he’s finally able to get the date, as well as a confrontation with Jameson.

One of the biggest things that’s plagued Spider-Man throughout his career as a hero is the fact that most people view Spider-Man as a menace. This is entirely due to the reporting done by the Daily Bugle, which – under Jameson’s orders – continually pumps out piece after piece on how Spider-Man is a danger to the people of New York. This has made the public distrustful of Spider-Man, and even other Marvel heroes have expressed their dislike for Peter in the past, but it seems that the future looks upon Spider-Man much more favorably.

According to Miguel O’Hara, eventually, people will come to view Peter Parker as one of the greatest heroes to ever live. This is not too surprising, since, after saving the world several times, it’d be hard for people to keep acting like Spidey was some serial menace. Arguing that Spider-Man robbed a bank is one thing. Trying to argue that Spider-Man didn’t fight against a cosmic villain like Thanos should be a lot harder. In due time, the world recognized that Spider-Man is a hero; meanwhile, Jameson, despite once being mayor of New York, and owner of a major newspaper, was forgotten entirely.

There’s no denying that Spider-Man is a true hero, but the people of his time often don’t recognize him for it, due to the lies and toxicity that Jameson is constantly putting out to a readership of millions. Certainly, Spider-Man does get recognized as a hero occasionally, though it is never on the level that he deserves. While Jameson can do everything he can to convince people that Spider-Man is a menace, history will look back on Spider-Man as one of Marvel’s greatest heroes, despite what J. Jonah Jameson says.
