Despite separating herself from her congregation in Medford, Texas following Pastor Jeff’s decision to boot her out due to Georgie and Mandy’s unexpected pregnancy, she remains steadfast in her faith.

Unfortunately, Mary’s new church comes with certain expectations, especially in terms of monetary donations. While she’s free to practice her beliefs, George disapproves of her significant contributions. Not only does he point out that they can’t afford it, but he also argues that it’s essentially a scam. Despite Meemaw’s support of George, Mary doesn’t budge, prompting her husband to take matters into his own hands by reaching out to Pastor Jeff. The Cooper patriarch attempts to convince him to take Mary back before she gets fully sucked into an exploitative church.

Ultimately, Mary finds herself back in her old religious community. At the end of Young Sheldon season 7, episode 5, “A Frankenstein’s Monster and a Crazy Church Guy,” the Cooper matriarch, Meemaw, Missy, and even George attend church — something that they haven’t done since the season 5 premiere. It’s uncertain if this also means that Mary will reclaim her old job as an administrator. Regardless, she has her husband to thank for this positive development in her life. Without his meddling, and despite having an ulterior motive, it’s highly doubtful if Pastor Jeff would have even considered courting Mary back.

All members of the Cooper family were somewhat worse in The Big Bang Theory. Young Sheldon softened each of them beyond being just one-note characters. The discrepancy in George’s depiction has been discussed countless times over the years, with the prequel presenting a flawed but devoted family man compared to how Sheldon and Mary described him as a no-good patriarch in the nerd-centric sitcom. That being said, the disparity in the versions of Mary also needs to be examined, especially in light of the recent years of Young Sheldon.

While the CBS family comedy-drama has maintained some of the hallmark attributes of the character, young Mary isn’t as judgmental or rude in her convictions. In The Big Bang Theory, she felt free to verbalize her prejudices, using her faith as a justification for her bad behavior. She was racist to Raj, anti-Semitic to Howard, and misogynistic to Penny — Sheldon’s closest friends for years. As previously confirmed, George will die sometime in Young Sheldon season 7, significantly altering the course of the family’s life.

Not much has been revealed about how the Coopers will react to George’s impending death. That being said, Georgie did reveal in The Big Bang Theory that Mary was too grief-stricken to function, hence the reason why he had to take over taking care of the family. Having been well-documented in the show, the Cooper matriarch tends to interpret the events of her life as either a punishment or reward from God. Given this, George’s demise could happen any time in the next couple of episodes of Young Sheldon. What makes this more terrifying is that it doesn’t need any more set-up, considering that his death is supposedly unexpected. It can happen at the beginning or the very last moment of an upcoming outing, and it would still be devastating.
