Young Sheldon Season 7 Episode 5 Is So Disappointing, Especially With What’s Coming

Under normal circumstances, Young Sheldon season 7, episode 5 would have been a great installment, but in the greater scheme of things, it is a massive disappointment. The Big Bang Theory prequel is getting ready to wrap up its final year, setting up a finale that will transition Sheldon to his eventual life in Pasadena, California, set up Georgie and Mandy’s upcoming spinoff, and finish the rest of the Coopers’ story in Medford, Texas. In its first few episodes, the family was separated, with Sheldon and Mary still in Germany, following the events of the Young Sheldon season 6 finale.

Speeding up its storytelling, the family was finally all reunited back home in Young Sheldon season 6, episode 4 — the same outing that retconned George’s cheating story from The Big Bang Theory. The event is not referenced in episode 5. Instead, it focuses on several plot lines involving all Cooper family members. Sheldon returns to East Texas and befriends Young Sheldon‘s Leonard and Howard replacements; Missy tries to throw a party at the Sparks residence, and Mary joins a new church. All of these plots are executed properly, and as always, the cast is great. Unfortunately, it’s still unsatisfying.

Young Sheldon Season 7, Episode 5 Is A Filler Episode

As great as it is, it doesn’t significantly move Young Sheldon towards its finale.

In Young Sheldon season 6, The Big Bang Theory prequel fully embraced its family comedy/drama format, with an increased focus on all members of the Cooper family. Season 7 continues that while also addressing issues about casting Sheldon aside. Despite being the show’s titular character, the boy genius was mostly sidelined throughout season 6, and being physically separated from his family didn’t help. Young Sheldon season 7, episode 5, “A Frankenstein’s Monster and a Crazy Church Guy,” highlights a much better storytelling balance for the prequel, as it gives all of its core characters compelling arcs.

That being said, Young Sheldon season 7, episode 5 is still a filler episode. CBS could not have tackled these storylines, and it could still have laid out a satisfying finale. It doesn’t address any lingering storylines that urgently need to be tackled. Sheldon’s computer experiment is a great standalone arc for him, but it isn’t connected to his life in The Big Bang Theory. Missy trying to throw a party doesn’t set up her future (unless there’s a romantic plot in the works between her and Billy). Finally, Mary’s return to church could have happened after George’s confirmed death.

Why Young Sheldon Season 7 Is Taking A Two-Week Break

Every year, Young Sheldon takes a break around mid-March.

Young Sheldon is already ending on a shortened final season, which means that the writers need to choose which storylines to prioritize and which ones to drop. Having a filler episode is already frustrating, but what makes this worse is that Young Sheldon‘s next episode won’t be released until April. This means that The Big Bang Theory prequel is currently in the middle of a two-week break.

While CBS has yet to offer an official reason for this mini-hiatus, it shouldn’t be a surprise for avid viewers of the popular family comedy/drama. Considering the season, Young Sheldon season 7’s break is likely because of March Madness. Every year, CBS broadcasts the games, knowing full well that they are a hit in terms of ratings. Currently, Young Sheldon season 7 will release its next new episode on April 4.

What To Expect From Young Sheldon Season 7, Episode 6

There are certain big plots confirmed to happen in the remainder of Young Sheldon.

Because of the hiatus, CBS has yet to release any information about Young Sheldon season 7, episode 6. Unlike previous outings, there is no sneak peek tag at the of episode 5. Despite this, certain plot lines are confirmed to happen in the remaining outings of The Big Bang Theory prequel. Firstly, Mandy and George’s wedding will go down in the family comedy/drama, despite the pair eventually going on to star in their own spinoff series after Young Sheldon. That being said, there hasn’t been any active planning for the event, so it may happen later in the year.

Secondly, and perhaps the most plausible scenario is the death of George in Young Sheldon. Unlike the wedding, there’s no need to set up his demise, considering its unexpected nature. It’s the perfect time to execute the dreaded plot, as it leaves Young Sheldon enough time to move forward and build towards a happy finale. Since Young Sheldon has already cleared his name regarding Sheldon’s cheating scandal allegations in The Big Bang Theory, there really is no other substantial storyline left for the Cooper patriarch other than his tragic death.
