Young Sheldon Season 7 Admits To Its Glaring Sheldon Problem That’s Already Hurt 2 Seasons

Young Sheldon ending with season 7 is proof that it cannot resolve its Sheldon problem that has been plaguing it for 2 seasons. Unlike a traditional cancelation, The Big Bang Theory spin-off is wrapping up its run despite its continued popularity. The prequel was a hit from the get-go, especially since it ran back-to-back with its parent series for its first couple of years. Once The Big Bang Theory ended in 2019, Young Sheldon took its spot as CBS’ premier comedy, and despite has become a ratings-winner for the network. Given this, it’s peculiar that Young Sheldon is wrapping up when it’s still at the top of its game.

Multiple ongoing plotlines need to be resolved by the end of the shortened Young Sheldon final season. George and Mandy’s romance, Missy’s redemption, and George’s possible death are among those narratives that must be addressed to ensure a satisfying send-off to the Coopers. Those are on top of Sheldon’s arc; when he returns home to Texas after his summer program abroad, he will start his final year in college at East Texas Tech. After that, he will be moving to California for his post-graduate studies. Currently, however, it seems like Young Sheldon is already skipping a key element from Sheldon’s storyline, emphasizing its ongoing problem with the character.

Why Young Sheldon Skips Sheldon’s Germany Storyline

Mary and Sheldon are back in Texas.

Young Sheldon Season 7 Admits To Its Glaring Sheldon Problem That’s Already Hurt 2 Seasons

The first behind-the-scenes video for the Young Sheldon season 7 premiere shows Sheldon and Mary are back in Texas on the heels of the Medford tornado. For context, the pair was on their way to Germany when the natural disaster hit their hometown, leaving the rest of the family to deal with the fallout from the catastrophe. Marry attempted to contact people back home, but she couldn’t get to anyone, leaving them totally in the dark. Sheldon is supposed to stay in Germany for the rest of the summer, and considering how the grant would be instrumental to his future.

Now, based on The Big Bang Theory, Mary had to go home and leave Sheldon in Germany to help his father rebuild their house. There are specific inaccuracies, but it’s safe to say that he was referring to this particular moment in the Young Sheldon season 6 finale. However, the Young Sheldon season 7 premiere will see both of them back at home, which likely means that there will be a significant time jump in between years. Fast-tracking its storytelling suggests that it will gloss over Sheldon’s time in Germany — a disappointing development, but an unavoidable one, considering everything else that is happening to the Coopers.

Young Sheldon No Longer Knows What To Do With Sheldon

Sheldon has barely had a compelling arc since starting college.

When Young Sheldon was conceived, the idea for it was to be the origins story of Sheldon. Considering this, it’s odd that the prequel is willing to skip a significant part of his arc by glossing over his time in Germany. That being said, this may be for the best, since it has long struggled to develop a compelling story for the character since he started college. His pursuits at East Texas Tech haven’t been compelling except for a couple of plots such as his explanation of why he hates engineering, which featured a cameo from Howard, and the failed grant database. Everything else has been underwhelming.

Simultaneously, Young Sheldon started expanding its storytelling. Mandy was introduced in the middle of season 5, on the heels of Georgie’s decision to drop out of school and work full-time. Meanwhile, George and Mary’s relationship started to turn for the worse with the involvement of Pastor Rob. Naturally, the interest shifted from the show’s titular character to the rest of his family. Moving forward, Young Sheldon has the responsibility to also tackle those arcs to ensure a great finale for the prequel spin-off.

Young Sheldon looking puzzled and stern

Although Sheldon is no longer the center of its storytelling, it doesn’t mean that Young Sheldon season 7 can easily cast him aside. There are a couple of plots focused on him that should be tackled in the show’s final season. Firstly, his upcoming graduation from college, marking the beginning of the true end of The Big Bang Theory prequel. Secondly, Sheldon’s transition from Medford to Pasadena, as he begins his new life. It’s confirmed that Young Sheldon will tackle his character’s story until he’s 15 years old, meaning that it will possibly show at least Sheldon’s first few months in what would be his forever home.
