Young Sheldon May Have Just Confirmed A TBBT Theory About The Show’s Narration

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Young Sheldon season 6, episode 20. Four years since ended, Young Sheldon season 6, episode 20 may have confirmed an ongoing theory about the prequel’s real ties to The Big Bang Theory. When CBS premiered Young Sheldon in 2017, it was meant to be supplementary viewing to its parent series. Many of the people who worked on the nerd-centric sitcom were also involved in the prequel. That includes Jim Parsons who played the original iteration of the socially-inept genius. Aside from being an executive producer of Young Sheldon, the actor also provides the adult narration of the show, essentially as if he’s telling the events of his childhood from the future.

During the earlier seasons of Young Sheldon, Parsons’ voice-over bookends every episode. Over time, it has become more sporadically used, but it remains an integral part of the show. Not only does it reveal additional post-The Big Bang Theory updates, but it’s also a stark reminder that Young Sheldon exists in the same reality despite their many plot inconsistencies. Unlike adult Ted Mosby in How I Met Your Mother, however, it’s unclear why older Sheldon is narrating the events of Young Sheldon. There hasn’t been any official information explaining the matter, but there have been a few theories about it — including one that the family comedy may have finally confirmed.

Sheldon Admits To Working On His Autobiography In Young Sheldon

In Young Sheldon season 6, episode 20, “German for Beginners and Crazy Old Man With A Bat,” Sheldon works to secure the funding for his Germany trip after learning that his family cannot afford it. While gathering everything that he can sell for his garage sale, a brief argument with Mary confirms that he is already working on his autobiography. Thanks to his eidetic memory, he claims that the events of his book will start from when he was still in her womb. While this may sound like a throwaway line, it actually has big narrative implications for both The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon.

This supports theories that adult Sheldon is working on his autobiography, hence why he’s recalling his childhood in Young Sheldon. Previously, there have been a couple of indications that this is the case, including Howard’s voice cameo in The Big Bang Theory prequel. In his rather brief guest stint, the Pasadena Gang’s astronaut was apparently recruited by his friend to write an introduction to engineering as part of Sheldon’s story. There was no mention of autobiography then, but this latest comment from the boy genius backs up the idea that he is working on a big project that chronicles his life.

Why Sheldon Stopped Working On It In The Big Bang Theory

Young Sheldon May Have Just Confirmed A TBBT Theory About The Show’s Narration

In The Big Bang Theory, there was barely any mention of Sheldon working on his autobiography. That sounds unbelievable, considering his high regard for himself and penchant for recording events. While this could easily be dubbed as another plot inconsistency between Young Sheldon and its parent series, there may actually be an easy way to explain this. It’s possible that Sheldon simply stopped working on the project when he got to Pasadena. He may have only revisited the endeavor after he won the Nobel Prize in Physics. This way, he has something to actually show for rather than just being a typical Caltech genius.

Young Sheldon season 6 airs Thursdays on CBS.
