Young Sheldon Creator Responds Show Ending With Season 7

Young Sheldon Creator Responds Show Ending With Season 7

Young Sheldon creator Chuck Lorre has responded to the long-running prequel to The Big Bang Theory coming to a close with season 7. The series follows Sheldon Cooper in his childhood, exploring his life in the late ’80s as a child prodigy. It was recently reported that season 7 would be a shorter, final season for the show, which begins airing on February 15, 2024.

Now, according to TVLine (via The Hollywood Reporter), Lorre has opened up about how Young Sheldon season 7 will end the series, confirming it was a creative decision. The creator said he alongside executive producers Steve Molaro and Steve Holland felt the story was coming to a close, with this latest final season being the best way to end it. Check out what Lorre had to say below:

The story of this extraordinary prodigy in a small town outside of Houston, in a family where he is very much a fish out of water — that story we’ve kind of told, and the remainder of his path leading up to The Big Bang Theory happens at CalTech, in California. Seven years… seems like the natural lifespan of [Young Sheldon], and that was a feeling that was shared between myself and both [series co-creator/executive producer] Steve Molaro and [fellow EP] Steve Holland, who have been instrumental in keeping this thing as extraordinary as it has been.

What To Expect From Young Sheldon’s Final Season

When it was first announced season 7 of the long-running sitcom spinoff would be its last, it was unclear if the show had been canceled or ended naturally. Lorre’s latest statement reveals he was part of the decision to end the series, indicating its final episodes will lead to a nature conclusion. While Young Sheldon has a shortened final season of just 14 episodes, this may force the show to focus on resolving its larger storylines.

There are multiple important events the final episodes of the show could have a larger focus on, such as Meemaw’s house being destroyed and Georgie possibly marrying Mandy. In addition, Sheldon is expected to leave Texas and go to California to align his character with The Big Bang Theory. His exit from the state he grew up in could make for a fitting end, setting the stage for the next chapter of his life.

The final season coming so soon means Young Sheldon may not address George’s death, which was confirmed in the flagship series. Despite this event likely not coming to fruition in the show, those final episodes can still reflect the lengthy journey this prequel has taken. It remains to be seen what storylines will be featured in the final episodes, and what they mean for the series’ conclusion.
