“You Don’t Hate Her For Being That Beautiful”: Margot Robbie Reveals Barbie Actor She Failed To Get

The Barbie movie tried to cast a major DC star, but they were unavailable. From the Oscar-nominated writer-director Greta Gerwig, the highly-anticipated Barbie movie stars Oscar-nominated actors Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken, who leave the perfectly plastic Barbieland in search of true happiness in the real world. In addition to the main characters played by Robbie and Gosling, the Barbie movie features a dozen different variations of the two dolls played by recognizable stars.

In a new profile by Vogue, Robbie revealed that the Barbie movie tried to cast a major DC star as another Barbie. During the casting process, the first actor that Robbie and Gerwig envisioned as Barbie was none other than Wonder Woman herself – Gal Gadot. Though she was not available for the role, Gadot’s “Barbie energy” became the blueprint for casting every iteration of the iconic Mattel doll. Read what Robbie said about trying to cast Gadot below:

Gal Gadot is Barbie energy. Because Gal Gadot is so impossibly beautiful, but you don’t hate her for being that beautiful, because she’s so genuinely sincere, and she’s so enthusiastically kind, that it’s almost dorky. It’s like right before being a dork.

Issa Rae in Barbie

Gadot would have been a perfect choice to play Barbie since the Wonder Women star personifies a certain ethereal combination of exuberance and beauty. However, she ultimately won’t be missed since the Barbie movie is still overflowing with recognizable stars playing different variations of the iconic Mattel doll. Some of the standouts include Kate McKinnon as Weird Barbie, Issa Rae as President Barbie, Dua Lipa as Mermaid Barbie, and Hari Nef as Doctor Barbie.

The Barbie movie showcases plenty of body diversity with Sharon Rooney as Lawyer Barbie and Nicola Coughlan as Diplomat Barbie. Other variants include Alexandra Shipp as Writer Barbie, Emma Mackey as Physicist Barbie, Ana Cruz Kayne as Judge Barbie, and Ritu Arya as Journalist Barbie, each of which is expected to bring something unique to the Barbie movie and its overall message. With this amazing lineup of actors, nearly every audience member will be able to identify with this diverse group of Barbies (and Kens).
