“You Can’t Take It Seriously”: Stellan Skarsgård Describes Working With 4 Of His Actor Sons

Actor Stellan Skarsgård reveals what it is like to work with his actor sons. Skarsgård Sr. has been working in the industry for nearly six decades, getting his start on television in 1968. Skarsgård also has four sons who are actors: Alexander, Gustaf, Bill, and Valter. Stellan Skarsgård is currently playing the role of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen in Dune: Part Two.

Speaking with Vanity Fair, Stellan Skarsgård speaks on what it is like to work with his sons on screen. According to Skarsgård, it is hard to “take it seriously” when acting alongside any of his four actor sons.

To illustrate this point, Stellan recalled a point where he and son Gustaf caught each other in uncontrollable laughter after seeing each other in a fake beard on a set. Check out the full quote from Stellan Skarsgård below:

“When I worked with some of the kids, you almost can’t take it seriously, you know? It’s like ‘Really, you are that character?’ Mmhmm, yeah. Like I worked with one once, Gustaf, in a period piece, and we both had beards on. And the first time we came on set we started laughing and couldn’t stop. But it’s lovely because you have the same kind of humor, you have the same kind of way of reading the script, and it’s very easy and it’s very safe. And also you feel loved. It’s very nice.”

2024 Is A Big Year for the Skarsgårds

As the patriarch and veteran actor within the family, Stellan Skarsgård still arguably has the most acclaimed reputation of anyone in his acting family. The other actors in his family are still highly active, however. This includes Bill, who this year will take on the iconic role of Eric Draven in the 2024 remake of The Crow. Bill Skarsgård has made a name for himself in the realm of character acting, having already played Pennywise in It and It: Chapter Two. This year, he will also play Count Orlok in the remake of Nosferatu.

Wow, It’s A Really Huge Month For The Skarsgård Family

The Skarsgård family is rarely hurting for work, but February 2024 has proven to be an especially busy period for the famous acting dynasty.

Alexander Skarsgård, who won an Emmy for his work in Big Little Lies, was in an episode of the Mr. & Mrs. Smith TV series this year. He is in production on multiple films, including his directorial feature debut The Pack. The Pack is a horror-thriller about a group of documentarians who travel to Alaska in order to find an endangered species of wolves. The Pack stars Alexander Skarsgård himself alongside Florence Pugh.

Slightly less well known in the mainstream are Gustaf and Valter Skarsgård, yet both are accomplished in their own right. Gustaf is best known for playing Floki in Vikings, while Valter has played in a number of Nordic works. Even when not working with actor dad Stellan Skarsgård, the Skarsgård sons have done a remarkable job making a name for themselves.
