The first trailer for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film Oppenheimer will debut in theaters today. Nolan’s first film since 2020’s Tenet, Oppenheimer stars Cillian Murphy as American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and tracks his work on the atomic bomb. Along with Murphy, Nolan’s film features an unsurprisingly star-studded cast including Florence Pugh, Jack Quaid, Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Kenneth Branagh, Rami Malek, Gary Oldman, Josh Harnett, Josh Peck, and Dane DeHaan. The Oppenheimer movie release date is currently set for July 21, 2023.

As with many of Nolan’s films a year out from their release, little has been revealed about Oppenheimer so far. While it is known that Murphy will play the lead, many of the supporting cast play characters that are as-yet announced. Though the film will likely take on a unique Nolan flare, it is interestingly not the director’s typical fare, genre-wise. Known for his high-budget action films like Inception, Tenet, and The Dark Knight trilogy, Nolan will dive into a new realm with this biopic. However, given the subject matter of the Manhattan Project and that Nolan’s war film, Dunkirk, was far from a typical presentation, Oppenheimer is sure to have its fair share of idiosyncrasies and intrigue.

After being limited to Oppenheimer cast set photos, viewers will soon get their first real look at Nolan’s latest movie. According to the Québec Culture and Communication site (via Trailer Report), the movie’s trailer was recently given an age-rating classification for theatrical distribution, a sure sign that it is on its way. Indeed, the Oppenheimer trailer has reportedly been attached to screenings of Jordan Peele’s Nope, the first of which begin today in the United States.

This news comes in conjunction with the new Oppenheimer movie poster that just released online. The post features Murphy amid an orange-red, explosive background, teasing his role as the so-called Father of the Atomic Bomb and promising a potentially tragic story. Perhaps the Oppenheimer trailer will further develop some of these elements and give viewers a sense of how Nolan will apply his talent for blockbuster set pieces to the prestige biopic.

It is yet unknown what the Oppenheimer marketing team has in store after the teaser trailer plays in theaters. Nolan trailers and posters have historically been a huge deal, and Oppenheimer will likely be no different. Following the lackluster box-office performance of Tenet, thanks to its releasing theatrically at the height of the pandemic, the Oppenheimer team will have to be strategic in order to make this Nolan installment a more profitable venture. All will be revealed in the coming months leading up to Oppenheimer’s 2023 release.
