The creators of Yellowjackets provide a cryptic update on the casting of the adult versions of Lottie and Van for the show’s second season. First airing on Showtime last year, Yellowjackets is a psychological horror/ mystery show following a high school girls soccer team as they struggle to survive following a deadly plane crash in the Canadian wilderness. The show quickly became a hit with both audiences and critics and currently boasts an impressive 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Part of the mystery of the show comes from the fact that it takes place across two different time periods. While much of the action takes place in the past, as the students attempt to stay alive in the woods, the storyline set in the present reveals some of those who survived and hints at the as-yet-unseen horrific events the team endured and the lasting psychological effects that persist because of it. Perhaps the biggest mystery, however, is how the team becomes the cannibalistic cult seen in Yellowjackets’ opening minutes and who the masked leader of the cult is. Yellowjackets features a large cast, including Melanie Lynskey, Tawny Cypress, Ella Purnell, Sophie Nélisse, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Sophie Thatcher, among others.
In a new interview with Variety, creators Bart Nickerson, Asley Lyle, and Jonathan Lisco discuss how close they are to announcing the casting of the adult versions of Lottie and Van. The answer is fittingly cryptic, but it does sound like fans will be finding out who the new cast members are sooner rather than later, at least that’s what Nickerson hopes. Bart Nickerson: “I don’t know how close we are to announcing it.”
Jonathan Lisco: “You’re basically witnessing a dramatic non-disclosure right now.”
Bart Nickerson: “I will give you probably a too-honest answer. We really hope we’re very close. We’re really pulling to be close soon.”
With Yellowjackets season 2 expected to go into production at the end of August, the creators are likely currently in the throes of securing new cast members and finishing the scripts. Lottie (Courtney Eaton), although seemingly somewhat innocuous at the beginning of the show, soon begins to experience various hallucinations and visions and, by the end of Yellowjackets‘ first season, occupies a leadership position within the group. Van (Liv Hewson), despite coming close to death after being mauled by a wolf, pulls through the ordeal, although it remains to be seen what has become of her in the present.
While season 1 answered some mysteries regarding what occurred to the team while they were stranded in the Canadian wilderness and the supernatural forces that plagued them, Yellowjackets season 2 has the opportunity to further expand on both Lottie and Van. By exploring what these characters are like in the present, Yellowjackets could reveal further answers regarding who the masked cult leader is and what effect Van’s brush with death had on her. Although there’s currently no release date set for Yellowjackets season 2, the production timeline suggests it could be released later this year or early 2023.
