X-Men’s Jean Grey Showcases New Costume In First Look at PHOENIX Cover Art

Warning: Contains potential spoilers for Phoenix #1!Marvel has released three exciting new variant covers for the first issue of Jean Grey’s new series Phoenix, coming during the line-wide X-Men relaunch. Showcasing a new costume and a return to the mantle of Phoenix, Jean’s fierce and fiery power is on full display in the images released so far. For this brand-new solo title, the Phoenix costume also gets a sleek redesign by series artist Alessandro Miracolo.

Marvel has released four covers for July 2024’s Phoenix #1 – by Stephanie Phillips and Alessandro Miracolo – including a main cover by Yasmine Putra, which provided the first glimpse at Phoenix’s new look. AKA and Rose Besch’s variants give a further at the updated costume, while Greg Land’s cover is a rendering of the classic Dark Phoenix.

Part of the X-Men’s grand summer rollout in 2024, Phoenix is one of three members receiving their own series, along with Storm and Wolverine. Separated from her mutant family, Jean ventures into the depths of space with only the Phoenix Force within her.

From the Ashes – Jean Grey And The X-Men Rise Again

As the advance material for her new series shows, Jean Grey will conquer her recent death by fully embracing her Phoenix identity. Having gone from Marvel Girl, to Dark Phoenix, and back again since her 1963 debut, Jean has been killed and resurrected more than most Marvel characters. Since she was killed in 2023’s Hellfire Gala, Jean and other mutants have taken refuge in the White Hot Room. The cosmic realm acts as both a home and afterlife to hosts of the Phoenix, which could be key to Jean’s latest resurrection and the mutants’ rise after the Fall of X.

The entire X-Men line is getting the Phoenix treatment ,as the 2024 relaunch has been marketed with the words “From the Ashes – A New Beginning”. However, Jean’s solo venture keeps her off any of the major teams, leaving the Omega-level mutant to face her destiny with the Phoenix alone. As the Phoenix Force has previously corrupted the mutant hero, Jean Grey’s new costume – reminiscent of the classic Phoenix look – and her embrace of the identity is a major step forward for the character. Exhibiting her strength and independence after tragedy, Jean lives up to the Phoenix name.

Jean Grey Embraces the Phoenix But Leaves The X-Men Behind

In an extraterrestrial quest after her rebirth, Jean Grey’s journey into the great unknown of space can show new depths to her abilities as the Phoenix. Given Jean’s Omega-level telekinesis combined with the immortal and destructive Phoenix Force, the mutant’s seemingly infinite power can be fully realized when she’s off-planet. While the motive for her adventures in space is still unknown, Phoenix will interact with Nova in the series’ first issue, and there could be more cosmic guest stars for Jean to team-up or reckon with in the future.

After countless deaths and personality shifts in group comics, Jean’s upcoming stand-alone adventure should better define who she is outside of her relationship to other mutants. Fresh off another resurrection and leaving the planet to find herself, Jean Grey still has plenty of untapped potential as a superhero in the Marvel Universe, even after sixty-plus years. Phoenix’s trip to space for her solo series, along with a new costume and embracing her destiny outside the X-Men, could be just what the character needs to level up in Marvel Comics.
