X-Men Reveals Why Cyclops Is Facing the Death Penalty

Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Uncanny Avengers #3With the Fall of X putting Cyclops and the X-Men in the firing line like never before, Marvel’s Merry Mutants are in the fight of their lives. For Scott Summers, that couldn’t be more literal as upcoming solicits have revealed that the fan-favorite X-Man is going to be facing the death penalty in the upcoming Fall of the House of X and Rise of the Power of X miniseries by Gerry Duggan, Kieron Gillen, and many more. And with Orchis actively working against mutantkind’s allies like Captain America and his Unity Squad, fans finally know the charge behind Cyclops’ sham trial.

Uncanny Avengers #3 by Gerry Duggan, Emilio Laiso, Morry Hollowell, and VC’s Travis Lanham finds Captain America speaking out against Orchis and anti-mutant bigotry in front of the charred remains of the X-Men’s Treehouse. Feeling the tide turn against them, Orchis’ Feilong asks for the location of their false flag operative, Captain Krakoa, only for Dr. Stasis to reveal that the evil Captain has gone rogue and stolen a nuclear bomb.

Never missing the opportunity to smear all mutantdom, Stasis continues and says, “We’ll clean it all up. We’ll need a big trial. Cyclops. Or Xavier.

Cyclops Is Being Blamed For Orchis’ Crimes

Cyclops Captured

Based on the teases that fans have seen form upcoming issues as well as recent issues of Immortal X-Men, capturing Xavier is clearly more difficult than Orchis is prepared to handle. However, they’ve already got Cyclops in custody – making him the perfect scapegoat for Captain Krakoa’s genocidal schemes. As Scott Summer has said himself, in many ways, Cyclops IS the X-Men. As a founding member and their most consistent field leader, he has as much claim to the team as Professor Xavier, Storm, or any other X-Men leader, if not more so.

Cyclops has led the X-Men through the brink of extinction countless times even when his more radical period before his death and resurrection alienated and divided other sects of mutantkind. But through it all, his place of importance among his fellow mutants can never be debated. A trial for Scott – even one held under the false charges secretly perpetrated by Captain Krakoa – would be a symbolic trial of not just the X-Men, but of mutants as a whole.

Marvel Comics' Cyclops

Cyclops is without a doubt one of the X-Men’s most stalwart members. Without him, it’s hard to say just whether or not mutantkind would have withstood some of their more devastating threats. But if Orchis and Captain Krakoa have their way, the X-Men are about to re-learn how to live without Cyclops.
