Wonder Woman’s New Enemy Rewrites the Power Level of DC’s Gods (Forever)

Wonder Woman’s New Enemy Rewrites the Power Level of DC’s Gods (Forever)

Warning: SPOILERS for Wonder Woman #795!With the introduction of a dangerous new enemy, Wonder Woman’s “rogues” are once again changing the shape of the DC Universe—if the Greek gods and Titans can be considered anything as simple as “rogues,” that is.

In order to stave off a loss of power caused by cultural irrelevance, the gods have teamed up with their once-enemies, the Greek Titans, in Wonder Woman #795 by Michael W. Conrad, Becky Cloonan, Amancay Nahuelpan, Tamra Bonvillain, and Pat Brosseau. As Wonder Woman and Wonder Girl battle the god Eros, Diana’s other allies face off against the titan Hyperion: “Older than time itself, father of the sun, the moon, the dawn.” The Titans are, according to classical Greek mythology, older than the gods, who themselves once destroyed the Titans in order to rule the world. Hyperion is a precursor to the more-well-known god Apollo, and here he appears as a fiery giant dressed in Greek armor, shooting massive burning projectiles from his enormous trumpet.

Wonder Woman’s Titans Existed Before the Gods

Wonder Woman’s New Enemy Rewrites the Power Level of DC’s Gods (Forever)

Wonder Woman is often associated with the classical Olympian gods, which makes perfect sense – she was born and raised among the Greek Amazon warriors on the secret island Themyscira. At times, the gods have been her patrons; a guiding (if complicated) force in her life, like the goddess Athena. Most often, however, the gods are Diana’s adversaries, especially Ares, the god of war. The Amazons’ current relationship with the gods is more than complicated, especially after Queen Hippolyta ascended to join them on Olympus. But it seems as though Olympus is once again rising up, under Hera’s leadership, against Wonder Woman and humanity at large, as the gods believe themselves to be dying from their cultural isolation.

DC’s Gods Are No Longer the Top of the Food Chain

If the gods are willing to team up with their former mortal enemies, the Titans, Wonder Woman and the larger DC Universe are in true danger. The Wonder Woman book and other related titles have been teasing Hera’s massive plans for months, but things are more dire than ever with the involvement of Hyperion – and surely more dangerous Titans aren’t far behind. Wonder Woman often has to grapple, both physically and intellectually, with the ancient gods on behalf of the Amazons and humanity at large. But with the introduction of the even-more-anicent Titans, Diana and her allies are facing a new kind of battle on a new kind of scale – one set to change the landscape of the entire DCU.

Readers will see this ongoing battle in the pages of Wonder Woman, but it’s likely to spill over into the upcoming Lazarus Planet miniseries We Once Were Gods. These stories promise to truly change the hierarchy of power in DC Comics, with Wonder Woman facing an unprecedented threat that even the gods fear.
