The next DC Extended Universe movie, Wonder Woman is nearly here, but already director Patty Jenkins is teasing what comes next in the (potential) Wonder Woman sequel. In Jenkins’ film, Gal Gadot stars as the eponymous DC Comics superhero – as the film itself takes audiences back to a time in which the eponymous Amazonian warrior princess attempts to bring an early end to World War I, as aided by American military pilot Steve Trevor (Chris Pine).
After spending several years in the making behind the scenes, Wonder Woman is currently Fandango’s most anticipated movie of the summer – and with early reactions reflecting generally positive reviews on the latest DCEU feature, things are looking up for Jenkins and Gadot. Diana Prince has had to fight for her chance in the cinematic spotlight, but it might not be long before she gets a sequel movie of her own; one set in a different historical time period, no less.
Speaking to Fandango, Jenkins was very forthright in regards to her plans for the Wonder Woman film franchise moving forward, and took special attention to make note of her wishes to take Diana Prince to America in future installments – in addition to bridging the gap between the 20th and 21st centuries represented by the leap in time between the events depicted in her film and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad from last year:
“I think it’s very important that she goes on to be a very international superhero. I can’t wait to bring her to America as well.”
Further speaking to said plans, Jenkins added:
“It’s something that one will know soon. Like, what she has been doing all of these years, but it’s definitely something I have thought a lot about.”
By the sound of things, Jenkins fully intends to continue exploring the world that will soon be introduced to audiences around the world by way of Wonder Woman – and with any luck, Warner Bros. will grant her the opportunity to further explore the character in subsequent franchise installments. For now, it’s hard to say exactly where the sequel will take potential viewers, but it seems as though various historical periods post-WWI (but before the present-day) are on the table.
The DCEU is definitely expanding at a rapid pace, following the dueling releases of Batman V Superman and Suicide Squad, and with any luck Wonder Woman will catapult the franchise even further forward ahead of the release of Justice League later this November. In the meantime, here’s to hoping for the very best from Jenkins and company.
