Wonder Woman 1984 Most Anticipated Movie Of 2020, Survey Finds

Wonder Woman 1984 tops Atom Tickets’ poll of the most anticipated movies of 2020. The Wonder Woman sequel takes place in 1984 as the title states. Several decades have passed since the original which was set during World War I; however, Diana A.K.A Wonder Woman’s immortality has allowed her to preserve her age over the years. In the sequel Wonder Woman, played by Gal Gadot, is forced to take down not one, but two villains. The first is her former friend, Barbara Miverva, played by Kriten Wiig, who has garnered her own superhuman abilities to become Wonder Woman’s foe, Cheetah. The latter is the greedy businessman Max Lord, played by Pedro Pascal.

Atom Tickets is an app that has modernized the way people plan movie outings. Lionsgate, Disney and Fidelity Management & Research Company have joined forces to create an app that allows customers to buy movie tickets, pre-order snacks and drinks, invite friends to join and more in advance. Atom Ticket’s survey determined the top five most anticipated movies of 2020. Superhero movies Wonder Woman 1984 and Black Widow take spots number one and two respectively. The James Bond franchise takes spot number three with No Time to Die followed by Fast & Furious 9 and Disney’s Mulan in four and five in the list. Matthew Bakal, Chairman and Co-Founder of Atom Tickets is also eagerly anticipating seeing these movies and pleased that the majority of the movies listed contain female protagonists.

We’ve been transported to all kinds of places and seen all kinds of people, plus the rise of diversity in storytelling drove massive audiences to the movies,” said Bakal. “As we enter 2020, we’re thrilled that movie fans are more excited than ever to see some fierce female heroes hit the big screen from Wonder Woman to Black Widow.”

Atom Tickets also surveyed millennials on their top movie picks of the decade from 2010 to 2019. Top three favorite franchises of the decade were Marvel’s Avengers, then Star Wars and lastly, Fast & Furious. Despite the top three franchises, Marvel swept the top five movies of the decade clean with Avengers: Endgame, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Infinity War, Deadpool and Black Panther in that order. Marvel also dominated with Guardians of the Galaxy and Black Panther winning the top soundtrack category. Dwyane Johnson, Hugh Jackman, and Tom Hanks were deemed favorite actors of the decade while Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Lawrence and Gal Gadot scored favorite actresses of the decade. The female filmmakers category presented another feminism win with Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman) in second and Ava DuVernay in third (Selma, A Wrinkle In Time) proceeding Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us).

The results of Atom Tickets’ survey clearly indicate that geek is chic right now. While in the past one or two superhero movies would have made the top movies of the decade list, all five movies this decade were superhero movies. Moviegoers, specifically millennials, demand both intense action and emotion in their films and are embracing a nerd culture that has been shamed in years past. As for the upcoming decade, movies will hopefully continue to embrace diversity. The top two anticipated movies of 2020, Wonder Woman 1984 and Black Widow, feature female protagonists, which is evidence that moviegoers want to see heroes of different genders and races over the standard heroes of past films. Filmmakers have a lot to live up to in 2020 and the years to come.
