Wonder Woman 1984 Marketing Continues With June Release Date Despite Coronavirus

Warner Bros. is continuing to market Wonder Woman 1984 and its June 2020 release date despite coronavirus. The sequel to 2017’s Wonder Woman is slated to be the second DC movie released this year, following the launch of Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) in February. Gal Gadot’s return as Diana Prince is scheduled to happen this summer, which is why the studios have already begun the marketing campaign for Wonder Woman 1984.

The first Wonder Woman 1984 trailer for the Patty Jenkins-directed sequel was released in late 2019, giving fans around the world a first look at what it will hold. The return of Chris Pine (Steve Trevor) was highlighted, while Kristen Wiig’s transformation into Barbara Ann Minerva aka Cheetah was only teased. But, it has recently been questioned whether or not Wonder Woman 1984 will be released this summer. Some of the biggest summer blockbusters have recently been delayed as coronavirus spreads, but that isn’t stopping WB and DC from promoting their highly anticipated sequel.

Warner Bros.’ Wonder Woman Twitter account shared an official new motion poster for Wonder Woman 1984 this morning featuring Diana in the Golden Eagle armor. Beyond the extremely 80s aesthetic, it is notable that WB and DC continue to market the movie in light of coronavirus. The studios have yet to announce another release date change for Wonder Woman 1984 and this piece of marketing promotes the current June 5 release.

As coronavirus continues to spread and change the movie release slate for 2020, WB has not yet moved any of its planned summer releases. The new animated Scoob! film set to hit theaters in May is the next WB release, so what the studio does with that release could be telling of whether or not Wonder Woman 1984 stays put. Based on the current state of the marketing, no delay has been announced, which explains why the studios are still using the previously announced date. That said, if coronavirus is still a threat and crowds are limited come June, then Wonder Woman 1984 could receive its fourth release date change.

The sequel was originally scheduled for December 2019 but was moved up to November 2019 after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker moved to December. Then, the film was moved back to June 2020 so the sequel could dominate the summer box office like the original did. At this point, DC fans will be left hoping that Wonder Woman 1984 is given that chance and that this pandemic has been contained before June. After all, other studios have shown just how quickly these decisions can change, with Mulan and A Quiet Place Part II delayed within a few weeks of their original releases, while F9 got delayed even after Vin Diesel said it wouldn’t happen. Now, fans will just have to wait and see if Wonder Woman 1984 is able to stick to its release date.
