Wonder Woman 1984: Kristen Wiig Was Forbidden To Take Photos Of Cheetah’s Costume

Kristen Wiig says she wasn’t allowed to take photos of her Cheetah costume in Wonder Woman 1984. The upcoming DC Extended Universe movie is the second in the franchise, following 2017’s massively successful first movie. The sequel will feature the returns of Gal Gadot and Chris Pine while also introducing new characters like Wiig’s Cheetah and the businessman Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal). It will also move the Wonder Woman timeline further into the present, trading World War I for the 1980s.

Though some parts of the film have been spoiled due to its delayed release date, Wiig’s Cheetah transformation is still the subject of much speculation. It’s been revealed she starts the film as Diana’s co-worker, Barbara Ann Minerva but eventually turns into the villainous Cheetah. DC has been careful not to release any footage of Wiig as Cheetah, but various merchandise items, some leaked, have given an idea of what Barbara will look like after she transforms. So far, the items have suggested a dramatic, intimidating look making Cheetah a worthy adversary for Wonder Woman.

Recently, Wiig discussed the secrecy required while filming Wonder Woman 1984, specifically in regards to her costume. While speaking with InStyle, Wiig was asked if she took photos of herself the first time she wore Cheetah’s outfit. Wiig responded, “No, we weren’t allowed to take any pictures. This was lockdown.” However she also teased, “They have it somewhere, and you will see it. But there are different evolutions to my character. I will leave you with that.“

Wiig’s comment about taking photos as Cheetah aren’t too surprising, considering the secrecy required for superhero films. The costumes are a big deal, with studios often waiting for an opportune moment, such as Comic-Con or another convention, to reveal them. In Wiig’s case, keeping Cheetah’s look a secret was likely even more important, since DC has clearly made the decision to wait until Wonder Woman 1984‘s release to show her transformation. It should make for a neat reveal and a crucial part of the movie, so it makes sense those involved didn’t want to risk any photos making their way online.

Wiig’s mention of Cheetah’s “different evolutions” is interesting as well. She could be referring to her character’s transformation, but official marketing and photos for the film have already shown Cheetah in two different looks, even before her final form. Before her villainous turn, it seems she’ll sport a more subdued look with glasses, before trading it in for a punk rock vibe including heavy eyeliner. She could use the latter look for a decent part of the movie before her complete transformation into Cheetah. However, this likely won’t be known for sure until Wonder Woman 1984 finally releases.
