The DC Extended Universe is set to increase the number of films that are released for the series. Wonder Woman 1984 will be the ninth entry in the franchise and the first since Justice League to feature the titular character. But despite DCEU being an established brand since 2013, there have still been several questions that remain for fans.
Since the next film is centered around Wonder Woman, most of the queries have to do with her, although certain aspects of the DCEU that can be answered in this film have also been considered. What burning questions are on DC fans’ minds? And will Wonder Woman 1984 answer them?
What Is The Status Of The Justice League?
It’s a shame that the Justice League film was so maligned that it frequently received memes making fun at its expense as despite its flaws, the team definitely had chemistry.
Wonder Woman had confirmed that Diana was in touch with Bruce Wayne. In the same vein, Wonder Woman 1984 can establish where Diana is in present-day, specifically over her happenings with the Justice League as this was a point that Aquaman outright ignored.
Why Did Wonder Woman Claim To Be In Hiding?
Those who like straightforward storylines likely prefer the Lynda Carter Wonder Woman over Gal Gadot’s version. After all, it’s a headscratcher as to how Wonder Woman will be active so publicly in 1984 when it was established in Batman v Superman — set in 2015 — that she’d last been seen a century prior.
Wonder Woman confirmed she was hiding in Justice League, and part of her arc in the film was accepting her responsibility as a hero. This has naturally led to the question as to why she claimed she was in hiding in the future when she’s clearly going to be seen in 1984. The film needs to tackle this using the DCEU’s internal logic rather than make a retcon.
Is Steve Trevor Dead In Present-Day?
Out of all the romances seen in the DCEU, Diana and Steve rank as one of the best couples. However, Steve was said to be deceased by the events of Batman v Superman, which clashes with his appearance in 1984 for this film.
It won’t satisfy fans if Steve is shown to be alive only in that particular year, as questions will remain over what his status is in present-day. The movie needs to establish exactly what happened to him rather than open up yet another plot hole over how he can be resurrected.
What Is The Extent Of Wonder Woman’s Connection With The Mother Boxes?
His uneven role in Justice League meant that Steppenwolf is largely hated as a supporting character, but the guy did bring the Mother Boxes to the forefront. Wonder Woman was surprisingly knowledgeable about these artifacts, so much so that she told an entire history about them to Batman.
The Blu-ray release of Wonder Woman had shown her interacting with the same Mother Box that eventually empowered Cyborg, furthering her connection to them. Wonder Woman 1984 needs to answer the extent to Wonder Woman’s dealing with these objects, as in if she can tap into their powers and just how the Mother Boxes have benefited the Amazons all these centuries.
Is Batman’s “Knightmare” Still In Effect Through Time?
Due to the upcoming release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, one of the biggest unresolved questions of the DCEU over Batman’s “Knightmare” could be solved. However, Wonder Woman 1984 needs to make a connection to this vision, seeing as how the Flash was supposed to be time-hopping at this point.
Darkseid’s bid to collect the Mother Boxes was said to be going on across time, making 1984 a year that qualifies under this logic. If nothing else, the film should at least confirm if the Knightmare scenario has been ended completely during the present-day.
What’s The Deal With Wonder Woman’s Armor?
It’s cool to see Wonder Woman donning that incredible Amazonian armor, but it clashes with the Wonder Woman of the future using lesser quality weapons. Logically, she should have busted this armor out for the fight against Steppenwolf.
To this end, Wonder Woman 1984 has to confirm when Diana truly needs to don her armor and make use of her greater weapons. It can easily tie into the story by establishing the boundaries that surround the usage of Amazonian armory.
What Happened To The Gods On Earth?
It was mentioned in the original film that Ares had slain the Old Gods one by one. However, this was mainly to establish him as a leading villain in the DCEU. Seeing as how Ares himself showed up and the Amazonians have been hidden all this time, it’s more than implied that some of the Old Gods might have survived.
In the DC Animated Universe, a twist in the story had arrived when it was revealed that Hades was Wonder Woman’s father. Regardless, Wonder Woman 1984 should confirm without a doubt that the Old Gods are no more, and not just restricted to exposition through dialogue but through visual evidence.
Where Are Wonder Woman’s Other Siblings?
More so than the case with the Old Gods, the demigods — particularly the many children of Zeus — have been MIA. Shazam! had confirmed the existence of Hercules since his powers are used by the superhero. The same went for Achilles.
These guys were not listed as having been killed by Ares, meaning that they should still be out there. It would make sense for Wonder Woman 1984 to dive into this aspect since her sibling relationship with Ares had been explored in the previous film. Even a passing mention of Zeus’ other children can appease questions about this issue.
What Is The Native American Demigod’s Purpose?
The appearance of “Chief,” a smuggler that Steve Trevor was friendly with, opened up a whole lot of questions over the purpose of the Native American demigod. That’s because this guy was actually Napi, the trickster demigod of Blackfoot folklore.
His status wasn’t expanded upon in Wonder Woman, but there was clearly a reason to introduce a Native American demigod, especially considering Diana was his Greek counterpart. Wonder Woman 1984 should ideally make a reference to Napi again and link to the other demigods in existence on Earth to close lingering questions over the purpose of Napi’s appearance.
How Did Wonder Woman Establish The Diana Prince Identity?
Wonder Woman introduced the Diana Prince identity when Steve Trevor encouraged her to go with it. However, this was during the first World War and the issue of keeping her new identity wasn’t a problem. Not so much in the ensuing years, as Diana was shown to becoming the curator of the Louvre.
How she did this is a mystery, seeing as she had no birth records or any kind of legal identity that she could use. Wonder Woman 1984 needs to answer how she got around to making a legitimate identity for herself as Diana Prince.
