Wolverine’s Weapon X Origin Is Gut-Churning Horror in Boundary Pushing New Art

Wolverine‘s experiences with Weapon X destroyed his psyche, leading to years of torment as he fought to overcome his programming and regain the memories and humanity stolen from him. Now, Marvel is showing what Logan actually went through in gut-churning art from acclaimed creator Peach Momoko.

Publishing over December, Marvel has revealed a new ‘Nightmare’ variant cover initiative. These covers will see Peach Momoko tackling iconic Marvel heroes and showing “the unsettling truths” behind their experiences and powers. For Wolverine #40 (from Benjamin Percy and Ibrahim Moustafa), Momoko depicts a nightmarish take on Logan’s origin in Weapon X, where he was subjected to horrifying experiments to bond unbreakable adamantium to his bones and brainwash him as a living weapon. The art for this issue has been shared to Instagram by Momoko.

Tortured and experimented on because of his mutant gene, Logan remains deeply traumatized by his time at Weapon X, which was memorably depicted in Barry Windsor-Smith’s ‘Weapon X’ arc in Marvel Comics Presents #72–84. This arc solidifed the iconography of what was done to Logan, which has appeared in multiple adaptations since, including Fox’s X-Men movies. Momoko opts to show Wolverine in his modern costume, suggesting this ‘nightmare’ art shows Logan reliving his experiences in the modern day.

Peach Momoko’s Nightmare Art Promises Big Things for Ultimate X-Men

Wolverine’s Nightmare Reimagining Showcases How Freaky Ultimate X-Men Could Be

Momoko’s take on the Marvel Universe has been enormously well-received by fans, with her X-Men stories drawing on Japanese folklore branded the ‘Momokoverse.’ Now, the talented creator is reimagining the entire franchise from the ground up, as Marvel relaunches its Ultimate Universe imprint – a separate timeline telling modern stories free from Marvel’s prior canon. Momoko’s Nightmare covers show how creative and varied her approach can be, with previews of Ultimate X-Men #1 suggesting a grotesque body-horror element will be in play.

Wolverine is no stranger to body horror, with his iconic healing factor repairing any damage done to him in the course of his superhero duties. However, Momoko gets to the heart of the horrifying dehumanization Wolverine suffered at the hands of Weapon X, showing the boundary-pushing style she’ll be bringing to Ultimate X-Men.

Wolverine #40 is coming December 20 from Marvel Comics, followed by Ultimate X-Men #1 on March 6, 2024.
