Wolverine’s OLD MAN LOGAN Tragedy Just Got Even Darker with Sick New Twist

Wolverine’s OLD MAN LOGAN Tragedy Just Got Even Darker with Sick New Twist

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Weapon X-Men #1! Wolverine’s Old Man Logan variant from Earth-807128 is perhaps the most tragic version of the iconic X-Men member in Marvel Comics history – and his story just got a lot more heart-wrenching. Old Man Logan tells the story of Wolverine as an old man in a world where the super-villains won, and practically every other surviving hero is the worst version of themselves. As his world fell, Wolverine did something so horrific and shameful, that he didn’t pop his claws again for decades afterward. And now, he’s done something identically horrific, and has just made the same vow.

In Weapon X-Men #1 by Christos Gage and Yildiray Çinar, the Phoenix has gathered a team of multiversal Wolverines to track down and kill an alternate version of the classic X-Men villain, Onslaught. When the ‘Weapon X-Men’ arrived at the world where Onslaught was hiding, they didn’t initially register the villain, as it was psychically hiding within hundreds of thousands of people at once – including practically all the X-Men of this world.

The reason these Wolverines were chosen for this mission is that they are mentally, emotionally, and physically capable of doing whatever it takes to keep Onslaught from gaining power. These Wolverines proved that by indiscriminately cutting down every member of the X-Men they saw. However, Old Man Logan wasn’t as immune to that level of horror as the Phoenix thought, something that became clear when Logan stabbed Jubilee in the chest, and immediately collapsed in sorrow.

Old Man Logan Had to Relive the Worst Moment of His Life in Weapon X-Men

Wolverine: Old Man Logan by Mark Miller and Steve McNiven

Old Man Logan shows exactly how the world fell to the super-villains – including and especially the X-Men. And as it turns out, Wolverine was the main reason why the X-Men were taken out of the fight fairly early on. When the villains made their play for world domination (under the leadership of Red Skull), Mysterio was chosen to take down the X-Men. He did so by using his illusions to trick the mind and senses of Wolverine into thinking the X-Mansion was being overrun by villains. Needless to say, it wasn’t.

All the ‘villains’ Wolverine saw were actually his fellow X-Men, and he unleashed his berserker rage upon all of them. When Mysterio dropped the illusion, Wolverine stared in horror at the carnage he caused, as the shredded corpses of his found family scattered the only place he ever called home. From that day forward, Logan vowed to never use his claws again. While he broke that vow during Old Man Logan, the end of Weapon X-Men #1 saw him making the exact same vow, as he couldn’t handle having slaughtered two versions of the X-Men, no matter the circumstances.

Old Man Logan’s Story Nearly Ended in the Most Tragic Way Imaginable

Not only did Old Man Logan have to relive the worst moment of his life in Weapon X-Men, but he nearly allowed it to destroy him. After stabbing Jubilee – who’s always been like a daughter to Wolverine – Old Man Logan just couldn’t take it. He dropped to his knees and nearly let the Onslaught-possessed Colossus beat him to death. If he hadn’t been saved by his fellow Wolverines, Old Man Logan’s story would have ended with the echo of the worst moment of his life screeching in his mind.

While he didn’t let Onslaught kill him, Old Man Logan did reaffirm his original vow to never pop his claws again after killing yet another X-Men team. Only time will tell if this vow will hold up any better than the last, but the one thing that is certain is how utterly dark this experience was for Old Man Logan, as this was certainly a sick twist that forced this version of Wolverine to relive a horrific tragedy.
