Wolverine & Captain America’s New Team-Up Redefines Their Friendship

Wolverine & Captain America’s New Team-Up Redefines Their Friendship

Few heroes have been active as long as Wolverine and Captain America. The two of them met while World War II was raging, and they faced a lot of battles together as both allies and enemies. Things haven’t always been rosy between the two, and they’ve had their fair share of ups and downs over nearly a century. Now, hundreds of thousands of mutants are dead or exiled thanks to Orchis’ Mutant Massacre, and Logan still has an ongoing plight with Legacy House – villainous auctioneers who sold his severed hand. Thankfully, Cap is stepping up to have his back, giving them a closer relationship than ever.

The recent solicitation for Wolverine #38 by Benjamin Percy, Juan Jose Ryp, Frank D’Armata and Cory Petit promises that Steve and Logan are “those old friends that go way, way back who you can always rely on.” Historically, that hasn’t been the case for the two of them, and suddenly being each other’s rock is actually a significant departure. Luckily for mutantkind (and the rest of the world), it’s an incredibly positive change. Enjoy the issue’s cover art (from Leinil Francis Yu) and summary below:

Wolverine & Captain America Are Getting Closer

Wolverine & Captain America’s New Team-Up Redefines Their Friendship

REUNITED – CAPTAIN AMERICA AND WOLVERINE! You know those old friends, the ones that go way, way back who you can always rely on? That’s STEVE ROGERS to LOGAN, whose friendship goes back to WORLD WAR II! It only stands to reason that as WOLVERINE faces the fallout from FALL OF X, that CAPTAIN AMERICA has his six! But as ORCHIS rises and LEGACY HOUSE takes advantage of the situation, who will fall? LAST MUTANT STANDING continues!

Wolverine has never shied away from confrontation, and Steve Rogers isn’t one to back down when he feels strongly about something, either. It’s no real surprise that the two have butted heads, and they’ve been at odds more than they’ve been pals – even when they were teammates. For example, in Uncanny Avengers #9 by Rick Remender, Daniel Acuna, and John Cassaday, Captain America lays into Logan, branding him a killer who it was a mistake to ever allow on the team. Meanwhile, during the height of the Avengers vs. X-Men conflict, the two got into it over the right way to respond to the Phoenix’s new host, and Steve had Logan forcibly removed from the Avengers’ plane (via Giant Man’s foot) after some hand-to-hand combat. Even their initial meeting saw Wolverine tricking Steve, on orders from the duplicitous Department H.

A True Wolverine and Captain America Friendship Can Turn the Tide

WOLVERINE CAPTAIN AMERICA WWII

As mutants face increasingly alarming threats from Orchis, the returning Children of the Vault, and more, Captain America’s new Uncanny Avengers team are trying to hold down the fort and avenge Krakoa after the devastating Mutant Massacre. Logan made his exit from the X-Men and his X-Force team just before it all went down, due largely to a major conflict with Beast. He still feels the sting of their loss, though, particularly because Jean Grey reached out to him just before her end. He’s dealt with betrayal, seeing literal pieces of himself auctioned off by Legacy House, and now stands alone. Many of his former allies are out of the picture, but Captain America is around and stepping up more than ever for the people Logan is sworn to protect. It therefore makes sense that the two will see each other in a better light than the past.

With so much pressure on mutantkind and Steve Rogers putting himself on the frontlines against their enemies, fans are finally getting a Cap and Wolverine who want the same things for the same reasons. It seems Marvel is setting up Wolverine and Captain America for a true friendship in the upcoming issue, giving fans the rare of experience of seeing them both truly, definitively on the same side.

Wolverine #38 is coming October 11 from Marvel Comics.
