Wolf Pack Is Not A Teen Wolf Spinoff, Clarifies Creator

The creator of Wolf Pack clarifies that the upcoming series is not a Teen Wolf spinoff. Adapted from the book series by Edo Van Belkom, and set to premiere on the Paramount+ streaming service in January 2023, Wolf Pack focuses on two teenagers — Everett (Armani Jackson) and Blake (Bella Shepard) — and chronicles what happens as their lives are forever changed in the wake of a California wildfire that awakens a terrifying creature.

Wolf Pack got a significant boost back in July, when it was announced that Sarah Michelle Gellar would star and executive produce the project. The news that the Buffy icon would be returning to the supernatural drama genre was unveiled at the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con, with Gellar joining Teen Wolf leads Tyler Posey and Tyler Hoechlin to tease some of what fans should expect when Wolf Pack debuts. Largely because of the way the reveal unfolded, it’s been widely reported that the two shows are connected. Jeff Davis, who created both Teen Wolf and Wolf Pack, has now set the record straight.

Reacting to the first photo from Wolf Pack, in which Gellar plays arson expert Kristin Ramsey, Davis commented on Instagram with the following: “#itsnotaspinoff #wolfpackonpplus.” Davis has previously said that Wolf Pack is not set in the same universe as Teen Wolf. But his latest post goes out of its way to refute any crossover between the two stories.

Why Wolf Pack Seemed Like A Teen Wolf Spinoff

The biggest reason that Wolf Pack was believed to be a Teen Wolf spinoff, and regularly referred to as such in reports about casting and production updates, has to do with how the project was announced. Given that Gellar was with Davis, Posey, and Hoechlin on the stage of Comic-Con, it seemed to signal that the two series were linked. But now, with the benefit of the clarification from Davis, it looks as though the intention was only to give a bit of a spotlight to Wolf Pack by announcing it alongside the details for the upcoming Teen Wolf movie.

There is, of course, also the fact that both shows revolve around wolves. Both shows are set in California, as well, and hail from the same writer. Despite those key similarities, Davis wants his new series to stand on its own. That could be beneficial in the long run, allowing the drama to set its own tone and mythology without having to be limited by what’s already been established in Teen Wolf. The show was a big hit and one of the relatively few teen dramas over the past decade to carve out a legacy for itself. Viewed through that lens, it could just be better for Wolf Pack to be its own thing.
