Wish’s Snow White & Seven Dwarves Easter Egg Explained By Directors

Wish’s Snow White & Seven Dwarves Easter Egg Explained By Directors

Wish directors Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn have opened up about a Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Easter egg hidden in plain sight. The animated film celebrates 100 years of Disney with dozens of hidden references sprinkled throughout the story. This includes references to older classics like Peter Pan, to newer projects like Zootopia.

Speaking with Business Insider, Buck and Veerasunthorn revealed how Asha’s friends are actually one of Wish‘s Disney Easter eggs, specifically referencing Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The directors unveiled how her group of friends were inspired by the Dwarfs, maintaining attributes reflected in their personalities and appearances. Check out what Buck and Veerasunthorn had to say below:

Veerasunthorn: We knew that we wanted to have Asha’s group of friends, the younger generation that’s on the cusp of making a decision of whether or not they would give their wish away to Magnifico. And we were like, well, friends, how about seven? How about seven personalities? It would be such a great nod to the first movie [Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs].

Buck: Even the color palette, their costumes are the same color as the ones [Dwarfs] they’re inspired by.

Because of the film’s celebration of Disney’s 100th anniversary, it’s no surprise Wish would directly reference the first feature-length movie the company produced. The 1937 classic paved the way for other major Disney animated films, such as Dumbo, Lady and the Tramp, Lilo & Stitch, and Frozen. To have the movie honored in the latest animated release – and ahead of the live-action Snow White remake – underscores how important Easter eggs are to the film.

Wish is dotted with plenty of other classic Disney film references, such as Asha wearing a cloak similar to the Fairy Godmother’s in Cinderella. References to Bambi and Pinnochio also show up, as well as a minor appearance from a character in Beauty and the Beast. With so many Easter eggs hidden throughout the film, it rewards viewers who have watched everything both old and new the company has produced.

However, the film doesn’t just rely on hidden treats from other films to be engaging. The movie is centered around Asha’s mission to save her kingdom from Magnifico and give everyone the chance to pursue wishes big and small. While Wish has a divisive Rotten Tomatoes score, audiences seem to have positive thoughts about the movie, likely helped by how the Easter eggs weave into the film’s narrative.
