The first feature drop for Windows 11 Version 22H2 has finally brought a native tabbed interface to File Explorer. The latest update comes almost a month after Microsoft rolled out the Windows 11 22H2 update, otherwise known as Sun Valley 2. It was the first major update to Windows 11 since its release last year and brought several changes to the operating system. Some notable new features in the Sun Valley 2 update include new Start Menu customization options, Taskbar drag-and-drop, a new Task Manager, and more.

Microsoft first announced a tabbed interface for File Explorer back in April, alongside a bunch of other features for Windows 11. The company highlighted the feature as one of the biggest improvements to File Explorer in years and one that would eliminate the need to open multiple File Explorer windows for power users and multi-taskers. Of course, users could implement the feature already with third-party tools, but a native tabbed browsing experience would bring it to more people and is expected to offer a more reliable experience for all users.

In a blog post detailing the latest update to Windows 11, Microsoft confirmed many new features are coming to the operating system. The highlight is the native tabbed browsing interface for File Explorer, something that Windows users for ages have demanded. According to Microsoft, the tabs will help users better organize their files and easily switch between folders. File Explorer also gets a new ‘Favorites’ section that will enable users to pin their most-used files. In addition, with OneDrive integration, users will also see which colleagues and collaborators have edited or commented on their files.

The latest update also brings Suggested Actions, which the company claims would make “collaborating with colleagues more efficient … by anticipating your needs and giving your suggestions for actions you may wish to take.” For instance, when Windows recognizes phone numbers in the text, it will highlight them, enabling users to click on them to call directly with Phone Link, Teams, or Skype. It would also do the same thing with future dates, allowing the users to click to schedule an appointment or add an event in the Windows Calendar app.

Another feature in the latest update is easier access to the Task Manager. As part of the plan, users can now simply right-click on the Taskbar to bring up the Task Manager option. Until now, right-clicking on the Taskbar would only bring up the Taskbar Settings option. Another new feature enables users to pin more apps to the Taskbar than space allows. For that, the Windows 11 Taskbar offers an entry point to an overflow menu, allowing users to see all their overflowed apps in one place.
