Will The Eternals Join The Avengers In MCU Phase 4?

Will the Eternals join the Avengers in Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe? The Eternals movie release was delayed a full year, but it’s finally headed to theaters in November. This will be the first MCU film featuring an established team since Avengers: Endgame. Now that the Eternals are shifting their stance from simply watching over humanity to being active participants following Thanos’ decimation, the immortal beings could go on to join Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. 

In the trailer for Eternals, the ancient beings are seen arriving on Earth at the dawn of humanity. However, they’re established as working behind the scenes to watch over people and aid in their progress over time. The Eternals — a group of ten cosmic beings including Ikaris, Sersi, Kingo, Makkari, Phastos, Ajak, Sprite, Gilgamesh, Druig, and Thena —  are seen joking about who will lead the Avengers now that Captain America and Iron Man are gone. Ikaris says that he could do it before he and the rest of the Eternals burst into laughter. But, how viable is the idea of the Eternals actually joining the Avengers in the future? 

While joining the Avengers is mocked by the Eternals, it’s possible that at least a few of the cosmic beings could go on to be a part of the team. While it’s doubtful that all ten of the Eternals will join the team, they could team up with the Avengers to defeat whichever major villain intends to wreak havoc on the world in the future, similar to how the Avengers had allies to help battle Thanos. This could come to fruition now that the Eternals have decided to come out of the shadows, taking on more active roles in the world following the events of Avengers: Endgame. It’s not so far-fetched to think that Sersi would at least join the ranks of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, especially considering her history with Black Knight, a human she falls in love with and who has a history with (and later joins) the Avengers.

In the comics, the Eternals have teamed up with the Avengers on a few occasions; together, they’ve fought Proctor, an alternate version of Black Knight, and the Deviants, the Eternals’ mutated and antagonistic counterparts (who will be introduced in the MCU film), among other notable villains. Gilgamesh and Sersi, who genuinely enjoyed living amongst and interacting with humans, were even full-fledged members of the Avengers for a while before eventually leaving the team. In fact, Sersi joining the Avengers is how she met Black Knight and the pair became romantically involved. The MCU has been built on the collective efforts of the Avengers and their allies, and with the Eternals and the Avengers teaming up having a comics precedent, it makes the idea all the more possible in future films.

The Avengers’ ranks will look a lot different in the MCU’s Phase Four, especially now that many of the team’s original members — save for Hawkeye, Thor, and the Hulk — are dead. With the Eternals moving into the light following Avengers: Endgame, their relationship with humanity is also changing. To that end, it makes a lot of sense that the Eternals would join up with the Avengers eventually. They have a lot to offer, including abilities the Avengers don’t have. Considering it’s unlikely Eternals will be the first and only time fans get to see the immortal cosmic beings in action, combining their efforts with an already established superhero team seems like the next logical step for the Eternals.
