Will Ready Or Not 2 Ever Happen? Here’s What We Know

Four years after the success of the original movie, Ready or Not 2 hasn’t materialized, leaving fans to wonder if a Ready or Not sequel will ever happen. In the original movie, scream queen Grace, played by Samara Weaving, must survive a killer game of hide and seek after marrying into a rich family with a strange secret. Ready or Not is a schlocky horror-comedy that leans into the campiness while also making important social commentary.

While horror movies have a tendency of bombing with critics, Ready or Not gained a high Rotten Tomatoes critic score of 89%. Additionally, the movie made thrived at the box office, grossing $28.7 million against its $6 million budget (per Box Office Mojo). Given the success of the movie, it seemed possible that Ready or Not would develop into a franchise. For everyone who wants to see Ready or Not 2 on the big screen, here’s everything known about the possible sequel.

Will Ready Or Not 2 Ever Happen? Here’s What We Know

In preparation for the release of Scream VI, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett – the directors of both the Scream sequel and Ready or Not – gave many interviews. During a conversation with Comicbook.com, the pair provided a much-needed update on Ready or Not 2, considering the first movie came out four years ago. When asked whether they would make Ready or Not 2, the pair responded, “That is the hope. We would love to,” meaning Ready or Not 2 is still a real possibility.

What The Original Directors & Samara Weaving Have Said About Ready Or Not 2

From the time that Ready or Not came out, the directors have expressed an interest in making a second movie. Back in 2022, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett told The Discourse Podcast that the sequel is in active development. However, based on the fact that Ready or Not 2 hasn’t been picked up by any studios, it seems like the pair meant that the story and script is in development, rather than production.

Though Samara Weaving hasn’t made any comments about Ready or Not 2, Bettinelli-Olpin shared a detail that could show her willingness to return for a second movie. When the filmmakers called her up to ask her about Scream 6, she didn’t hesitate. Betinelli-Olpin said, “So, we literally called her up on the way to dinner one night and by the time we were at dinner, she was like, ‘I’m in, I’ll be out there! Just tell me where to go, and I’m on my way’.”

Weaving’s agreement to work on Scream 6 came before she even knew what the role was. Her readiness to work with the filmmakers again is a good sign for the people who want to see Ready or Not 2. Additionally, based on Samara Weaving’s growing horror movie catalog, she likely feels passionate about the genre and would happily return to one of her biggest horror roles to date.

What Ready Or Not 2’s Story Could Be About

After Ready or Not‘s ending, there are two main directions that Ready or Not 2 could go, continuing the first movie and taking the anthological route. The sequel could look at what happens to Grace after the events of the first movie. Because her husband died in the explosions, Grace likely couldn’t get a divorce from her husband, so she’s still linked to the Le Domas family. As such, it’s possible that she gets the wealth and curse from their deal with Mr. Le Bail. In that case, the curse could impact Grace and her spouse down the line in Ready or Not 2 if she ever decided to remarry.

Alternatively, Ready or Not 2 could set up the future franchise in an anthological format, focusing on an entirely different family than the La Domases. Based on the existing lore, it’s highly unlikely that Ready or Not‘s demon only created the deal with one family. Mr. Le Bail seemingly thrived on being worshiped, requiring the family to sacrifice humans and animals as well as chant in his name. It seems highly plausible that Mr. Le Bail created this deal with many other families, and now he controls the entire 1%. This franchise direction seems highly probably based on the filmmakers’ comments on the endings they considered for the first movie.

Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett had the idea to include a post-credits scene for Ready or Not in which a couple walks into a convention hall in a fancy hotel, and it’s a conference for Le Bail (via Bloody Disgusting). While the idea ultimately got scrapped, it offers a potential direction for the second movie. The Le Domas family’s sacrificial ritual centers on their board game empire, but not every family would want that kind of business. In that case, Ready or Not 2 could explore the way this element works in a different type of empire.
