Will Loki And Thor Reunite In The MCU?

Will Loki And Thor Reunite In The MCU?

Despite being separated in the MCU since Avengers: Infinity War, Thor and Loki could soon be reunited. Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston both debuted in 2011’s Thor as the eponymous Thor and his adopted brother Loki, respectively. Since then, the brothers have become staples of the MCU, embarking on many adventures both together and apart, though they have had one of the franchise’s most tumultuous relationships. Just when they started to become true brothers, Loki was killed at the hands of the Mad Titan Thanos in 2019’s Avengers: Infinity War, but that doesn’t mean a reunion for Thor and Loki can’t still happen in the MCU’s future.

Originally depicted as a villain in the MCU timeline, Loki has undergone strong character development, going through two separate redemption arcs. Initially, Loki redeemed himself by saving Asgardians and fighting alongside Thor, the Hulk, and Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok, but this version of the character met his demise only moments later. However, the Avengers’ Time Heist in Endgame allowed a version of Loki from 2012 to escape, only to be captured by the Time Variance Authority and thrust into his first solo MCU adventure in Loki on Disney+. This rushed him through another redemption story, and made a reunion with Thor even more likely.

Loki’s Executive Producer Wants A Thor Reunion

Will Loki And Thor Reunite In The MCU?

During an October interview with Variety, Marvel Studios executive producer Kevin Wright, who has been working on Phase 5’s Loki season 2, was questioned whether Loki could ever rejoin the MCU’s main continuity. While explaining that “that’s the hope,” Wright also voiced his support for a reunion between Thor and Loki occurring in the MCU’s future, suggesting that Loki’s two seasons had been getting the God of Mischief to “a certain place emotionally,” that could culminate in him returning to his brother. This could spell great news for the further development of the brothers’ relationship in the MCU, particularly after they’ve spent so long separated.

Why Loki & Thor Need To Reunite To Complete Loki’s Arc

Tom Hiddleston in Loki season 1 finale

Tom Hiddleston entered Phase 4’s Loki season 1 with the same villainous intentions as the version of Loki from The Avengers, who brought an alien army to New York City and fought the original Avengers team. However, learning the truth of the TVA, coming face-to-face with his multiversal variants, and fighting for a new glorious purpose saw him mature, soften, and become something of a hero in the MCU’s Phase 4. This growth is set to continue in Loki season 2, particularly after his interaction with He Who Remains, a variant of Kang the Conqueror, but Loki’s monumental redemption arc is still missing one key element.

Loki and Thor had regularly been pitted against each other early on, and Loki was killed shortly after they began to form a real bond. The current version of Loki in the MCU never experienced this familial connection with Thor, and though it could be argued that he has created a new family with Sylvie and Mobius, it would be great to see him rebuild his relationship with his brother. For Thor, this reunion may be more confusing, as he witnessed Loki’s death in Infinity War and has now gone over five years without his brother, so this would surely be an emotional moment for the MCU.

Where Could Loki & Thor Reunite In The MCU?

Chris Hemsworth in Thor Love and Thunder's New Asgard

Loki season 2 premiered on Disney+ on October 5, 2023, and is set to run for six episodes until November 9. With little known about the full extent of the Phase 5 series’ storyline, it’s possible that Chris Hemsworth could reprise his role of Thor during Loki season 2. While this hasn’t been confirmed by Hemsworth or Marvel Studios, this would be a great opportunity to bridge the gap between Loki and the MCU’s main timeline. Recent speculation has also suggested that Thor 5 is in the works at Marvel Studios, which could bring Loki back to the big screen and may include a touching reunion between the two brothers.

Perhaps the most realistic place for Loki and Thor to reunite in the MCU would be in Phase 6’s Avengers: The Kang Dynasty or its 2027 sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars. The Kang Dynasty is expected to form a New Avengers team, which could certainly include Loki in the roster, especially since he has more knowledge than most of the MCU’s multiverse and Kang the Conqueror’s variants. Secret Wars is also expected to feature cameos from previous MCU actors, as well as those from non-MCU Marvel franchises, so this could be Marvel Studios’ perfect chance to bring Loki and Thor back together.
