Will Kang Dynasty & Secret Wars Be Bigger Than Infinity War & Endgame?

Will Kang Dynasty & Secret Wars Be Bigger Than Infinity War & Endgame?

Marvel’s Multiverse Saga will culminate in two Avengers movies in 2025, and it will be difficult for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars not to be compared with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. The first MCU phase not to include an Avengers movie, Marvel’s Phase 4, had been criticized for the apparent lack of a bigger plan. Those concerns were eased once Marvel revealed its plans through to Phase 6, and while the Multiverse Saga is already different from the Infinity Saga in many ways, the similarities between The Kang Dynasty/Secret Wars and Infinity War/Endgame are hard to ignore.

Unlike the Infinity Saga, which saw two “smaller” Avengers movies before the ultimate confrontation against Thanos, the Multiverse Saga is saving the Avengers for Phase 6. With many more releases each year thanks to Disney+, Marvel is moving its story forward faster than ever before, and while only three years have passed since Endgame, several new characters and storylines have already been introduced. Not much has been shown of the Avengers as a team after Endgame, which can be seen as disappointing, but helps increase expectations for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars.

After Avengers: Endgame brought together almost every MCU superhero to battle Thanos and went on to become the second-highest-grossing movie of all time, it was not easy to picture how Marvel could surpass what it had done with the final two Avengers movies of the Infinity Saga. Marvel’s best chance at creating something bigger than Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame was the multiverse, which is why it is not surprising that Phases 4, 5, and 6 are the Multiverse Saga. That said, while Avengers: Secret Wars has the potential to be much bigger than Avengers: Endgame, the multiverse crossover can only work if Avengers: The Kang Dynasty succeeds in establishing, and bringing together, the new core characters. Therefore, to ensure Avengers: Secret Wars is bigger than Avengers: Endgame, it may require that Avengers: The Kang Dynasty has a slower pace than Avengers: Infinity War.

Will Avengers: The Kang Dynasty Be Bigger Than Infinity War?

Will Kang Dynasty & Secret Wars Be Bigger Than Infinity War & Endgame?

Kang The Conqueror is a villain who transcends the multiverse and has many great and terrible variants, which certainly makes him a more imposing threat than Thanos. In opposition to this threat, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty will be the first movie to feature a post-Endgame Avengers lineup, meaning that it will have to spend a considerable amount of screen time establishing this new Avengers roster and bringing a fresh team together. There are reasons to consider that Avengers: The Kang Dynasty might be a Young Avengers movie, focusing on young heroes like Kate Bishop, America Chavez, and Ms. Marvel stepping up to fight Kang.

Such a theory comes from the Young Avengers’ connection with Kang in the comics, and it makes a lot of sense, considering what has been established in Marvel’s Phase 4. All of that said, it does not seem like Avengers: The Kang Dynasty will be a massive crossover on the same scale as Avengers: Infinity War, but rather a more strategic film that will move all the pieces to where they need to be before Avengers: Secret Wars. And while, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty might not be as expansive as Avengers: Infinity War, it does not mean the stakes will be any less intense.

Will Avengers: Secret Wars Be Bigger Than Endgame?

Avengers Endgame vs Secret Wars

Considering the scope and the scale of Marvel Comics’ Secret Wars, especially the 2015 version, Avengers: Secret Wars is expected to be much bigger than Avengers: Endgame. In the comics, the Secret Wars were a redefining event that saw the culmination of almost a decades worth of some of Marvel’s best Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men stories. Not only that, but the 2015 Secret Wars was also a new beginning for Marvel Comics, as it readjusted the canon and combined some elements from the Ultimate Universe with Earth-616.

The Secret Wars comic book arcs involved almost every possible popular Marvel character, and not just from one universe. Even if Avengers: Secret Wars contains major changes from the comics, the idea of the Avengers and other heroes having to come together to stop threats to the entire multiverse is the perfect setup for the film to have a much larger and more diverse set of characters than Avengers: Endgame. Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness have already proven how the concept of the multiverse can make for exciting, never-before-imagined crossovers – and now Secret Wars can repeat the same trick on a much larger scale.

For example, Avengers: Secret Wars could see the return of a number of multiversal characters that have been in the MCU already, like Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man, Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man, and Patrick Stewart’s Professor X, in addition to many more crossovers which haven’t happened yet. Whether an almighty Kang variant brings all of the heroes together in order to wipe them out, or the heroes find ways to recruit others across the multiverse, it has every opportunity to move beyond previous films. With the potential of combining not just heroes like the Avengers and the Fantastic Four but also their multiversal counterparts, Avengers: Secret Wars has everything it needs to be bigger than Avengers: Endgame, especially if Avengers: The Kang Dynasty sets it up correctly, and ends on a cliffhanger.
