Will Baldur’s Gate 3 Have Crossplay?

Will Baldur’s Gate 3 Have Crossplay?

The question of whether Baldur’s Gate 3 has crossplay or not has been recurring as a new version of the game is moving toward launch. The latest critically-acclaimed turn-based RPG by Larian Studios is already available for PC and will be released for PlayStation 5 consoles in September. Baldur’s Gate 3 features an optional co-op mode in which friends can play campaigns together and venture through the world of Faerûn with each other.

In Baldur’s Gate 3’s multiplayer co-op mode, it is possible to actively play together or set off on different adventures in the same shared world. The host, for instance, may be fighting their way through a dungeon, while a co-op player is delivering a side quest in a faraway town. With such a mode, it has been a frequent doubt if players from different pools will be able to play together in an eventual crossplay feature in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Will Not Have Crossplay Between PC & PS5 (For Now)

Will Baldur’s Gate 3 Have Crossplay?

Baldur’s Gate 3 will not have crossplay functionality between its PC and PlayStation 5 versions. This means that players on different platforms altogether will not be able to experience the co-op mode together. Larian Studios confirmed the information in an interview with Wccftech. The company does mention that it will dedicate some effort to making crossplay work between platforms after the game’s launch, which means it may receive the functionality in the future. Currently, there is only support for crossplay between Windows and Mac, but not between the PC version and the Sony console edition.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Does Have Cross-Save

In spite of the lack of crossplay in Baldur’s Gate 3, the turn-based RPG will have a cross-save feature across PC and PlayStation 5. According to Larian Studios in the same interview with Wccftech, the title will be shipped with cross-save. Ultimately, this means that it will be possible to connect PC and PS5 accounts and carry over progress to the preferred platform. If a campaign has been started on PC, it may be picked up and continued on PS5 – the issue is that it may not support co-op play, as friends on PC may not be able to connect due to the lack of crossplay.

This inconvenience may be dealt with after the game arrives for PlayStation 5 consoles on September 6, as Larian mentioned there may be a cross-play functionality added in the future. The lack of crossplay in Baldur’s Gate 3 has not actually impacted its value as a turn-based RPG – in fact, the game is thriving. Considering the title’s impressive commercial success and critical acclaim, it may be possible that Larian turns its efforts into supporting Baldur’s Gate 3 for a longer time than expected.
