Why White Vision’s Existence Already Set Up S.W.O.R.D.’s MCU Fate

Why White Vision’s Existence Already Set Up S.W.O.R.D.’s MCU Fate

Creating the White Vision towards the end of WandaVision will likely result in significant repercussions for the agency S.W.O.R.D. and its acting director Tyler Hayward (Josh Stamberg). An offshoot of S.H.E.I.L.D., the Sentient Weapon Observation and Response Division was founded by Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch), the mother of Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris). However, Tyler Hayward took control of S.W.O.R.D. following Maria’s cancer death during The Blip.

In WandaVision, it was revealed that Hayward began dismantling and experimenting on the body of Vision (Paul Bettany) as part of S.W.O.R.D.’s Project Cataract following the events of Avengers: Infinity War. The trauma of seeing her love in pieces was the catalyst for Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) to create the artificial reality in Westview. In the WandaVision series finale, Wanda’s created version of Vision comes face-to-face with S.W.O.R.D.’s White Vision. The latter is last seen having his memories partially restored and flying away.

Why White Vision’s Creation Is An MCU Controversy

Why White Vision’s Existence Already Set Up S.W.O.R.D.’s MCU Fate

Tyler Hayward’s creation of the White Vision directly violates the Sokovia Accords. The Accords state that self-aware artificial intelligence is banned entirely since it is a significant concern among governments. Granted, Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) recently revealed on She-Hulk: Attorney at Law that the Sokovia Accords have been repealed. However, this was not the case during the timeframe of WandaVision. It is also safe to say that the ban against self-aware artificial intelligence would likely remain even with the repeal.

There are many possible opportunities for S.W.O.R.D. and Tyler Hayward to face repercussions for violating the Sokovia Accords. One likely possibility is that Hayward appears in an antagonistic role in the upcoming VisionQuest series, which is currently in development and set to continue the story of the White Vision. Another possibility is that S.W.O.R.D. appears in The Marvels, where Tyler Hayward is ousted as director, and Monica Rambeau takes her rightful place in taking over the agency her mother founded.

Why S.W.O.R.D. Created White Vision

WandaVision Episode 4 - Tyler Hayward

Tyler Hayward and S.W.O.R.D. were willing to create White Vision because of the traumatic events during The Blip. As Hayward tells Monica Rambeau, one of the victims of The Blip, it was tough to be one of those who were left behind. Hayward viewed Vision as less than an intelligent being and more as a powerful weapon that can be utilized. Hayward truly believed that he was doing the right thing by rebuilding Vision.

As seen in the WandaVision finale, Tyler Hayward failed in his attempts to blame Wanda for the resurrection of Vision. The location of White Vision is currently unknown after flying away following the restoration of his memories. VisionQuest will pick up the White Vision’s story while hopefully also providing S.W.O.R.D. and Tyler Hayward with the repercussions they deserve.
