The trailer for the show seemed to position Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as a worthy follow-up to Mutant Mayhem. From the return of the voice-cast and the same style of humor the film employed to the continuation of its story, the spin-off show looks set to tide audiences over until TMNT: Mutant Mayhem 2 is released. However, despite the many similarities between the two projects, they had one glaringly noticeable difference: animation style.

Tales Of The TMNT’s Quicker Development Likely Changed The Animation Style

The animation style of Tales of the TMNT is decidedly different from that of TMNT: Mutant Mayhem. The latter followed in the footsteps of animation projects like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish to harness a unique animated style. While Tales of the TMNT emulates this, there is an obvious difference between the projects.

This naturally begs the question of why a TV show and movie that are so closely related have such distinct animation styles. The reason as to why likely stems from the quick turnaround time of Tales of the TMNT. The show was announced shortly after the movie’s success in July 2023 and begins streaming in Summer 2024. This means that the quick development time of Tales of the TMNT meant the show’s creators could not utilize the incredibly time-consuming animation style of its predecessor, opting for a simpler style.

Concerning how exactly the two animation styles are different, it is easier to break down when looking at Tales of the TMNT. While the animation for the spin-off show still looks fantastic, vibrant, and well-drawn, it is more akin to traditional 2D animation. Similar to the original animated look of prior TMNT TV shows, Tales of the TMNT opts for 2D animation with a distinct Mutant Mayhem twist.

The film itself, TMNT: Mutant Mayhem, adopted the more recent trends of Hollywood’s animated feature films. Like the Spider-Verse films, TMNT: Mutant Mayhem blended the worlds of 2D and 3D animation to craft a wholly unique look. This style is incredibly beautiful and allows most movies utilizing it – TMNT: Mutant Mayhem included – to emulate the comic books from which they often originate only with fantastic 3D models to give them an added sense of reality.
