Why The Saw X Torture Traps Made The Director Nervous

Saw X director Kevin Greutert teases the gruesome torture traps in the upcoming sequel, revealing that some even had him feeling apprehensive during filming. After first getting its start back in 2004, the Saw franchise now consists of nine feature films, with a tenth on the way. The upcoming sequel sees Tobin Bell return as John Kramer, with the mastermind once again channeling Jigsaw after getting caught up in a medical scam in Mexico.

Now, ahead of the Saw X release date, Greutert tells SFX Magazine (via GamesRadar) about the traps that are to come in the new installment. The director explains how the devices and situations are conceived, revealing that certain trap sequences were actually concerning to film for safety reasons. Check out Greutert’s full comment below:

“I have lots of books on medieval torture machines and other dark stuff, and sometimes we just pore through it and shoot ideas off each other. Some of the traps have evolved quite a lot from how they started. And then you have to think about how to actually pull it off. I was very nervous about some of the things that we did; nervous on a safety level and nervous thinking it was just going to look ridiculous.

“Far more so than on the other Saw movies, we had to do a lot of testing. Mostly in pre-production, but we wound up having to split the shoot into two parts – three weeks in November and three weeks in January – because it was so complicated. We had to make so many prosthetics and machines, and over Christmas, we spent the entirety of it figuring this stuff out.”

What We Know About Saw X’s Gruesome New Traps

Why The Saw X Torture Traps Made The Director Nervous

While the specifics of many traps have yet to be revealed, the recent Saw X trailer provided a good look at some of the devices that are to come. After being led to believe that his tumor had been removed at a special facility just outside Mexico City, Kramer discovers that it had all been a lie. He then returns to seek vengeance against the perpetrators of the scam, hooking each person involved up to various torturous machines that look to be some of the franchise’s most disturbing.

One scene in the trailer seemingly shows a doctor, played by Octavia Hinojosa, with his head trapped in some kind of electrocution device. The metal frame has many wires running along its surface, suggesting that if the doctor doesn’t complete his task on time – in this case extracting pieces of his own brain – his whole head could be getting zapped. Another particularly painful device has a victim’s fingers attached to wires, with a quick shot showing the wires pulling a finger backwards and breaking it.

As shown on the Saw X poster, another trap will involve tubes being connected to a victim’s eyes, but it’s not yet clear what will be making its way down the tubes. The intricacies of many of the other traps have yet to be revealed, but the trailer does affirm that the devices will be causing quite a lot of bloodshed. Like the other movies in the franchise, Saw X is rated R, suggesting that audiences will be seeing most or all of Kramer’s scammers meet grisly ends.
