Why Star Wars Has Delayed Andor Season 2

Why Star Wars Has Delayed Andor Season 2

Andor season 2 has officially been pushed back, with most now expecting it to release in 2025. Andor season 1 was a hit for Disney+, with Tony Gilroy’s unusually dark Star Wars TV show telling one of the darkest live-action stories set in this beloved galaxy to date. Starring Diego Luna as Cassian Andor, it serves as a prologue to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and this tale has taken an unusual approach – ditching the typical fan-service and Easter eggs in favor of a much more intense, character-driven drama. Season 1 received rave reviews, and perfectly set up Andor season 2.

Production on Andor season 2 was halted in July due to the actors’ and writers’ strikes – when only two weeks’ filming were left. Given that’s the case, it had generally been assumed getting filming restarted would be a priority for Disney. Instead, there’s been no news since the strikes ended, and recent announcements from Lucasfilm and Disney have confirmed rumors that Andor season 2 has been pushed back – likely to 2025.

Lucasfilm Needs More Time To Commission New Shows

Initial reports of Andor season 2’s delays have blamed the strikes, but that seems unlikely given how little time was needed to finish production. The most likely reason is a little more complicated, and tied to a background problem most viewers haven’t noticed; the fact Lucasfilm doesn’t really have all that many TV shows commissioned going forward. Disney and Lucasfilm recently confirmed the 2024 Star Wars slate, and it includes just four TV shows – two live-action, and two animated.

Production has yet to begin on The Mandalorian season 4, and scripts haven’t even been written for Ahsoka season 2 (which has yet to be officially green-lit). That means Andor season 2 is literally the last thing Lucasfilm has in any state of readiness. This is the knock-on effects of the writers’ strike; future Star Wars TV shows haven’t been written, let alone gotten to a state where they can start filming. Given this context, it’s reasonable to assume Andor season 2 has been delayed to give Lucasfilm some breathing room.

2025 Will Be A Major Year For Star Wars

This does, however, mean 2025 will be a good year for Star Wars. The Mandalorian season 4 is expected to release that year, meaning Lucasfilm’s flagship TV show will drop in the same year as the second season of a critically-acclaimed hit. What’s more, it’s worth noting there are likely other animated shows in the works as well – hopefully Star Wars: Visions season 3, meaning some more beautiful tales that are unrestrained by Star Wars canon. As disappointing as Andor‘s delay may be, the future still looks very bright indeed.
