Why Scream 6’s Tara & Chad Romance Was Important To Jenna Ortega

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Scream 6.

Scream 6 features a budding romance between Tara and Chad, and Jenna Ortega now reveals why she’s such a big fan of this new development. After being introduced in last year’s legacy sequel, Tara, Sam (Melissa Barrera), Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown), and Chad (Mason Gooding) return in Scream 6, now dealing with a new Ghostface in New York City. Sam now enjoys a secret romance with neighbor Danny, played by Josh Segarra, and Tara and Chad also spend much of the movie flirting before finally kissing towards the end.

In a recent interview with Collider, Ortega addresses Tara’s new romance with Chad in Scream 6 and explains why it’s ultimately a good thing for the development of her character. Tara spends much of the previous movie running, screaming, and generally being terrified, but giving her a romantic interest in Scream 6, Ortega explains, gives her an entirely new dimension. Check out Ortega’s full comment below:

“I think it’s just being able to add that layer for Tara, and I think because we’ve only ever seen her in distress for four hours now, I think it’s really wonderful for her to have some sort of relief, and especially in a character as lovely and cool as Chad. Also in the fifth one, we had no interaction at all. I don’t think we ever talked to each other, so I remember Mason and I being really surprised, but then also really pleasantly surprised when we got to work with one another because, fortunately enough, we kind of get along. Any sort of relationship is good for the evolution of a person, so I think that seeing Tara also have that added layer, I think it adds dimension and makes her more interesting.”

What Could Be Next For Tara & Chad After Scream 6

Why Scream 6’s Tara & Chad Romance Was Important To Jenna Ortega

Two Ghostfaces seemingly kill Chad by stabbing him numerous times during Scream 6‘s climax, but, miraculously, Gooding’s character survives. This means that should Scream 7 get the green light, the film will have a number of options in terms of how to explore Tara and Chad’s budding relationship. Crucially, however their relationship unfolds, the dynamic will unearth new dimensions for both characters, portraying them as more than just potential Ghostface victims.

It’s possible that, after the events of Scream 6, Tara and Chad will officially be an item, dealing with the types of problems that typically come with being in a relationship at their age. A loving dynamic would also heighten the stakes when dealing with a new Ghostface, with any injuries and deaths for either party sure to sting even more. It’s also possible, however, that Tara and Chad’s new relationship won’t last, much like what happened between Gale (Courteney Cox) and Dewey (David Arquette).

That being said, the franchise is also no stranger to romantic storylines remaining solid over multiple films, with Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott still seemingly happily married to Patrick Dempsey’s Mark Kincaid. Considering Sam and Danny also have a budding relationship in the latest film, it’s possible that a prospective Scream 7 will be more romance-heavy. Whatever ends up happening, Tara and Chad’s new dynamic in Scream 6 makes both characters more nuanced and creates some exciting possibilities for the future.
