Why Kraven the Hunter Was Delayed By Almost A Year Explained

Sony’s Kraven the Hunter release date was delayed by almost a year, moving from October 6, 2023, to August 30, 2024. Movie delays are not exactly rare, and can typically be explained by internal developments in the course of a movie’s production, whether for better or worse. But in this instance, the delay of Kraven the Hunter is due to a wider issue that is currently pervading Hollywood and the film industry at large.

Kraven the Hunter was initially set to be the next Spider-Man villain in Sony’s Marvel universe to receive a standalone movie, following in the footsteps of Venom and the more poorly-received Morbius. Delaying its release until August 2024, however, has pushed back Kraven the Hunter within that lineup, meaning it will now follow Madame Web and Venom 3, which are slated for release in February and July 2024, respectively. Given that the Sony Spider-Man Universe is in the early stages of establishing these characters, this shouldn’t impact the narrative too heavily, and it is easy to see why Sony has made the decision to delay Kraven the Hunter.

Kraven the Hunter Was Delayed Due To Hollywood Strikes

Since May, Hollywood has dealing with strike action from the WGA and SAG-AFTRA following significant labor disputes. The combined strike action of two Hollywood unions has had a massive impact on multiple movie studios and their production schedules, with Sony being no exception. In fact, Kraven the Hunter is just one of many movies to experience a delay in its initial production schedule, which will help guard against the backlash that movie delays typically trigger. Perversely, it may even evolve into a net positive for Sony with regard to the response to Kraven the Hunter when it is finally releases next year.

Why Kraven the Hunter’s Release Delay Is Good For The Movie

Movie delays are rarely a good sign, often indicating messy productions that are translated into the final product. In this case, however, the Kraven the Hunter delay might be a good thing, as it affords Sony some golden opportunities. For one, it gives Kraven the Hunter some breathing room as the negative response to its predecessor, Morbius, still lingers a year later. For another, it allows Sony more time to gauge the audience’s response to its Spider-Man universe and react accordingly, giving the studio the opportunity to perfect the origin story of one of Spider-Man’s most beloved villains before release.

Will Kraven the Hunter Be Delayed Again?

In the current climate, there is really only one reason that would explain another Kraven the Hunter delay, and that is if the Hollywood strikes continue for longer than expected. Suffice it to say, this would affect a lot more than just Sony’s release schedule (MCU Phases 5 and 6 would also take a hit, for example), and will be an easier pill to swallow than if the delay stemmed from internal struggles. The fact that Kraven the Hunter was delayed once before already, having originally been slated for a January 2023 release, will also be weighing on Sony’s mind, meaning the August 2024 release is pretty rock-solid.
