Why Hollow Knight: Silksong Won’t Be At Nintendo’s New Indie Direct

Why Hollow Knight: Silksong Won’t Be At Nintendo’s New Indie Direct

A new Nintendo Indie Direct will take place tomorrow, August 11, but fans shouldn’t expect to see Hollow Knight: Silksong during the show. Silksong is the upcoming sequel to Hollow Knight, which was originally announced in 2019, but little news has been revealed about the game since, and it still lacks a release date on any platform.

The Nintendo Indie Directs generally feature lesser announcements that aren’t given time in the company’s regular Directs. The last Nintendo Indie Direct showcased a few notable games, with Oxenfree 2 arguably being the biggest announcement of the show. There have been exceptions, with games like Cadence of Hyrule revealed during an Indie Direct, but the high-profile releases are usually saved for the full Directs that happen throughout the year.

The next Nintendo Indie Direct will take place on August 11 and there is already speculation that Silksong will be one of the games shown during the event. However, despite the excitement, it’s unlikely that the Hollow Knight sequel will appear, since it has already missed some high-profile shows earlier this year.

Silksong’s Absence From E3 Doesn’t Bode Well For Nintendo’s Indie Direct

Why Hollow Knight: Silksong Won’t Be At Nintendo’s New Indie Direct

Silksong was a notable absentee from E3 2021, but the developers at least gave fans a heads-up by confirming that it wouldn’t appear during the show. E3 2021 was the biggest gaming event of the year and there are only a handful of smaller shows remaining in 2021. It also wasn’t that long ago, since E3 2021 took place in the middle of June. It’s scarcely been two months between E3 2021 and the Nintendo Indie Direct. If the developers wanted to reach a much wider audience, then it would have made sense to show the game during the Nintendo E3 2021 Direct, rather than saving an announcement for a much smaller show that fewer people will be watching.

With all of that being said, the developers have yet to comment on the Nintendo Indie Direct. It’s entirely possible that the past two months have been crucial in allowing the developers to create a new trailer and come up with a release window. It’s also possible that the developers are hoping to be the proverbial big fish in a little pond with a big Silksong announcement during the broadcast. The hype around this game has been building since it was first announced and the silence has only increased excitement, so it seems like Nintendo would want to save a Hollow Knight: Silksong announcement for one of its main Directs, especially as there is one rumored to be happening in September.
